My "real" name is Sandy Simpson - married with 2 daughters, aged 14 and 16 (already!). Have lived for some years now in Bolton, still the largest town in England. Played chess briefly as a university student in the late 1970's and have been interested in the game since being taught the moves by a family friend as a boy of about 6 or 7. Am now 52 years old and used to run quite a lot before my lower limbs started to object (2.38 marathon in 1991). Currently trying to start running again (and again and again, on revisiting this profile), find playing on the machines at the gym and floating up and down the pool far easier. I find watching chess games, especially live, relaxing and entertaining. Other than the brief period at university, have never felt any urgent need to excel at chess.

About my Nic:
"Slid" is a weak anagram of "Sild" a small tinned fish in tomato-goo that I once flicked down the front of my (clean and going-out) shirt.

Mrs Slid found this amusing and the name stuck.

My favourite players are:
Whose moves I often understand - Fischer, Capablanca and now Carlsen. Whose moves I less often understand - Tal, Larsen, Korchnoi, Kasparov.

TheSlid: There is no opponent playing our great game that Kramnik would be more afraid of tomorrow than Ivanchuk. "No preparation or mindset can put your fate in your own hands." So, who will turn up as the player of the white pieces against Vladimir, son of Boris, fourteenth Champion of the

TheSlid: <csmath: Too bad I will have to teach tommorow so I will miss the round. But teaching mathematics makes a lot better living then when I was sucking my parents money for travelling to play chess.:-)> Well - that was heart felt. I think a number of British Gm's felt the same.

   Oct-16-12 Speelman vs J Durao, 1978

TheSlid: Weakness of the Last Move, as Tryfon likes to say! In a fairly horrid position, 23...Qc2 removes a defender of the key square at e8. In those days, I suspect Jon's hair was longer than this game, comparatively speaking.

TheSlid: <However, I'm more interested in the Gelfand-Giri game, when Giri still has to prove his choice of opening!> I prefer the rook to the two static Black Knights in this position.

TheSlid: Just watched the series on Wilhelm Stienitz. Lovely feel to your production. A slow down on the chess board sequences, plus a commentary by a reputable presenter would make this very marketable on TV. Not populist channels, but maybe specialist. The music, as I said before, is quite

TheSlid: Hi <AJ> I've not been on the site much for years now, but it seems as though you have edged one more year on me again! My last post was on P47 it seems...hope that much of the last 40 pages was constuctive dialogue. Happy (much belated) birthday and best wishes as ever to you ...

   Sep-03-11 A Masters vs A McHarg, 2009

TheSlid: <I thought White played well, Black ... more like a typical amateur> Yes, indeed, AJ! Rugby was an amateur game when McHarg acompanied the formidable Gordon Brown in the Scottish second row. Not that anyone on here has a clue what I am talking about!

   Aug-26-11 C Bauer vs Fressinet, 2011

TheSlid: Chessbase describes the Black position at move 12 as "basically lost". Quite amusing, though, how even a player like this can get into trouble playing automatic moves in the Pirc. Not often a chess game make the audience laugh. Bravo Laurent! For continuing the great French ...

TheSlid: <kingscrusher: Finally an exciting game I can video annotate! Wooo Hooo!> Look forward to this, mate, though it could be weekend before I can study your efforts. Love the stuff!
