My "real" name is Sandy Simpson - married with 2 daughters, aged 12 and 15 (already!). Have lived for some years now in Bolton, once the largest town in England. Played chess briefly as a university student in the late 1970's and have been interested in the game since being taught the moves by a family friend as a boy of about 6 or 7. Am now 51 years old and used to run quite a lot before my lower limbs started to object (2.38 marathon in 1991). Currently trying to start running again (and again, on revisiting this profile), find playing on the machines at the gym and floating up and down the pool far easier. I find watching chess games, especially live, relaxing and entertaining. Other than the brief period at university, have never felt any urgent need to excel at chess.

About my Nic:
"Slid" is a weak anagram of "Sild" a small tinned fish in tomato-goo that I once flicked down the front of my (clean and going-out) shirt.

Mrs Slid found this amusing and the name stuck.

My favourite players are:
Whose moves I often understand - Fischer, Capablanca. Whose moves I less often understand - Tal, Larsen, Korchnoi, Kasparov.

TheSlid: Hey - AJ - don't talk it down, beating Fritz 11 is a great achievement. It's not like tiddlywinks or baseball where there's mainly luck involved! (I'm having a Brit laugh about the baseball, btw). Go Goldsby!

TheSlid: Thanks <Eyal>, d4 is indeed unpleasant. I have a chess engine (Fritz), but use it even more rarely than I visit the site here these days. This has been a great tournament and I have sort of followed the results on a daily basis. Good to see that there are still some helpful, ...

Nov-14-09 Leko vs Carlsen, 2009 (replies)

TheSlid: Looking at the position at W's 50th move (as per the useful diagram provided by the helpful <zarg> on page 1), we see the "book" situation of RP, BP and R vs R. This can be drawn, but the drawing Tabiya, as I remember it, has (in this case) the White King on g2 and the White ...

Nov-14-09 Ponomariov vs Morozevich, 2009 (replies)

TheSlid: Oh, gosh, I'm reading a tactics book by John Emms at the moment and the position at move 26 might so easily be a page 2 "elementary puzzles" position with W to play. Like - "ouch!" - so too can I play, Alexander.

TheSlid: <Domdaniel: <maxx> #2 is Stevens, #3 is Blake. I thought #1 might be Yeats on an off-day, but he isn't one of your options. It's bad enough to be Tolkien, I guess.> LOL I never actually read ANY of the poems in LOTR but spotted No 1 as a definite Tolkien for the same ...

   Sep-25-09 Levon Aronian (replies)

TheSlid: <I really believe aronian is more champion material than carlsen at the moment. Most people think the Kasparov Carlsen team will be indistructible but i simply disagree kasparov style is so different from carlsen the boys game might get worst if he try to play in such a way.> ...

TheSlid: <The chess Gods do not like people abusing them: they also punished Leko against Kramnik for trying to draw his way to the world title> Thanks, mate, for making me laugh out loud. Great stuff you put on here and better still on the board. Well done, Nigel, we still remember ...

Sep-18-09 Aronian vs Grischuk, 2009 (replies)

TheSlid: <Can someone explain to me when a game is won by luck?> Maybe, <Stoned Knight>, if I were playing, the other guy's mobile goes off...and he's Levon Aronian!

   Sep-18-09 C F Schultz vs Carls, 1900 (replies)

TheSlid: <GM Lev Alburt taught me that - when you see an idea - you should use as many different move orders as possible. > And I, of course, have this as a major failing. I would have played Qg3 in the 2 seconds it took for me see it. Then I'd have left the board theatrically and ...

Sep-18-09 Grischuk vs Aronian, 2009 (replies)

TheSlid: I had a look at <Albertan>'s analysis - cheers for this, btw! Is it just me, or is Lev just busted after 22.g5? No compensation whatsoever for the exchange and white has better pawns on the K side than black on the Q.
