Jun-21-17 World Team Chess Championship (2017) (replies)

Troller: <USA have a ready made excuse with the three top guns missing. No pressure there, the lads should just settle down and enjoy themselves. Norway have no such excuse, Carlsen is only man not of a team. (under current form Norway may be better off without him :) )> Norway is ...

May-04-17 Russian Team Championships (2017) (replies)

Troller: <In the Major league may participate no more than 1 player who does not have Russian citizenship. In the Premier league may participate no more than 3 players who does not have Russian citizenship.> But here we are talking <citizenship>, not chess federation? In such ...

   Apr-27-17 Reykjavik Open (2017) (replies)

Troller: This tournament is 10 rounds. Giri has white against L'Ami in last round.

   Apr-20-17 Mads Andersen

Troller: Mads Andersen defended his national title during Easter. This was a relatively weak field with only 2 GMs (the remaining 8 players all IMs though), and the grandmasters crushed the field with 7/9 and 7/9 respectively. Tournament table: http://turnering.skak.dk/Tournament...

   Apr-19-17 Matulovic vs Fischer, 1968

Troller: I found a small piece written by Bent Larsen on the Vinkovci tournament. Larsen and Fischer met afterwards in Copenhagen 1968 and Fischer showed some of his games. These are then given with Fischer's comments, albeit in Danish (and possibly simply reproduced from memory by Larsen). ...

   Apr-19-17 Sutovsky vs A Korobov, 2017

Troller: 5..Nbd7 is rare and probably not very good. Sutovsky took 6 minutes to reply 6.g4, and another 6 for 7.g4. Apparently Korobov had not anticipated this, as he took more than 20 minutes to play 7..a6, having been in prep till then. But Black remains cramped with pawn-e7 not getting ...

   Mar-23-17 Viktor Korchnoi (replies)

Troller: <offramp: I believe Korchnoi had aspirations to be an actor but he had a speech impediment.> Yes, according to Larsen (citing another Russian if I recall correctly), he had trouble pronouncing the word "draw".

Mar-21-17 Karpov vs Kasparov, 1984 (replies)

Troller: <Feb-19-10 Billy Ray Valentine: I'm surprised this has never been a Game Of The Day.> Well, all good comes to those who wait. 17.Rfc1! is vintage Karpov. In his own analysis I think he mentions he did not calculate everything, but he felt that this plan would win the pawn.

   Mar-20-17 Winter Classic (2017) (replies)

Troller: I see also Zherebukh is now American. It does not seem to have paid off chesswise, but maybe he is playing chess as an amateur nowadays.

Mar-20-17 Ruifeng Li vs D Howell, 2017 (replies)

Troller: Indeed, well fought. Also I am happy to see that Black invites the Bronstein-Larsen variation, although White did not comply.
