Tugas is the Visayan name of a Philippine tree whose light-colored wood is often used for the white pieces of a chess set. The black pieces are best carved from the dark wood of the tree we call kamagong.

   May-08-13 Anand-Carlsen World Championship (2013) (replies)

TugasKamagong: Carlsen is 22,a nice poetic age, so I looked at who else played for the men's world title while still in his 20s. My list: Lasker was 25 in 1894, Marshall 29 in 1907, Smyslov 27 in 1948, Bronstein 27 in 1951, Tal 23 in 1960, Spassky 29 in 1966, Fischer 29 in 1972, Karpov 27 in

TugasKamagong: to <wordfunph>: I'm #270 on your list of BW members. You seem to have forgotten that I resigned from BW in June 2010. I'd like to remind you my resignation was irrevocable. I now request that you delete my name from that list in protest against toktorook and torrefan ...

TugasKamagong: Carlsen says "I mean" or "Well, I mean" too much. Radjabov and Ivanchuk say "OK" or "Well, ok" too much. If it was up to me, I'm not sure I would hire them as tv commentators. Good thing they can get by on playing chess.

   Apr-01-13 Magnus Carlsen (replies)

TugasKamagong: The scenario I outlined a few posts above didn't even come close to the real thing. My only lucky guess was giving Ivanchuk even chances against Kramnik. Carlsen missing 31.Bd5 was uncharacteristic of him. Even less characteristic was getting into zeitnot. His making the time ...

   Mar-27-13 Lev Polugaevsky

TugasKamagong: I kinda hope the Polish GM Grzegorz Gajewski will produce a son he'll name Paulo. Seems to me "Paulo Gajewski" would be pronounced very much like "Polugaevsky."

Feb-01-13 Le Quang Liem vs C Sandipan, 2013 (replies)

TugasKamagong: Sandipan's 3rd win against Le (going by the cg.com database), making the personal score between them 3-0 with 3 draws. In this game Chanda gives up his Q for N and R, but his 2 rooks on the 7th, and the B in the background, turn into monsters. Interesting that in his 2nd win ...

   Jan-28-13 M Paragua vs D Debashis, 2012 (replies)

TugasKamagong: I rather like the pun. In English it seems to mean Das has been given the boot, which indeed in this game he has. In German "das boot" simply means "the boat" but this happens to be the title of a 1973 novel by Lothar-Günther Buchheim. The novel is in German, I would read it ...

   Jan-27-13 Tata Steel (2013) (replies)

TugasKamagong: Stodgery: a very nice word, or should I say neologism. The funny thing is, no sooner than you've coined it, some very nice examples of it make their way in here.

   Jun-08-12 W So vs Navara, 2012 (replies)

TugasKamagong: The last phase of the endgame comes after 56.Rxg4 Kxa5: [DIAGRAM] If we use the Nalimov tablebase from the website <novice.forever> gives above, www.shredderchess.com , it will tell us that White has a tablebase win. Here White's task is to reach the Lucena Position, ...
