|Jul-29-11|| ||gauer: In the CVD format (.cbv in chessbase), attempts at constructing an entire tournament file & saving the tournament as (regular) "swiss" with certain types of byes (Canadian organizers seem to be inconsistent with awarding of 0, 1, or 1/2 point byes, based sometimes on whether the final round was played or not...) of 0-ply games vs a "bye-pair" player (to fill in all those blanked entries of a chessbase x-table) would want to have the running colour-table know when a person had to guess at a "due" colour. Since chessbase 9 doesn't seem to swiss-pair with the same flexibility of Canadian software (SwissSys), sometimes extending the x-table to include extra "player1, bye" (vs byerequest1), "player2, bye" (vs byerequest2), etc could cause the entire cbv file to change some other (legit, non-0 ply) final gamescore reslts to change their values & give strange results (after doing things like a chessbase "integrity check" to see if the file really thinks that it is a swiss-style assembly...).|
In 1 or 2 cases, it may have changed the ["Result"] tag, but not the delimiter value when it tossed off errors such as "run-time error in:" 10501, 20501, 20911 or 22801. However, since chessgames is not chessbase error reporting support, there is probably not much need to talk of further complexities of entering or pairing olympiad-style team swisses for recording in chessbase.
It's nice to see that CVD/cbv/cbh format usually pastes well from chessbase into notepad, and then onto an upload page (sometimes after slight editing of a cbh header to better match a chessgames header or pid name spelling convention), but those types or errors are ones to watch out for.
The fact that the cbh rather than the pgn has an easier way to call a look-up (say, for entries of players of post-2006 age in the big2006 database that is often used as a reference database for chessbase) of a player spelling format (at their save mask & replace mask menus where the "?" buttons appear) is a major reason to use that format for scoresheet entry.
Not feeling brave enough to try to build a custom version that would match (some) Canadian or chessgames format spellings of names as a pid encyclopedia list that chessbase could use in its save mask.

You’re clearly talking about a new project that will establish a world-wide pid directory and other important information to make sharing of chess data more robust. My first technology choice will be Web services which would allow everybody an easy access. Also an open system of accumulating and extending the database will encourage chess fens to join effort. A lot of members here at CG.com already offered their help and suggestions. But we need a modern product designed from scratch. Who should be doing this? My first choice would be FIDE. Don’t they already have a pid directory?
No, I don’t believe in proprietary formats and I’m convinced that they’ve done more harm to the chess community than good. Few minor conveniences cannot hide out the fact that the product lacks vision and misses to address so many important aspects. Frankly, a huge collection of chess games shouldn’t be called a database until it has its own pid directory. It beets me how they managed to maintain such low expectations with an offering of that price tag.
|Oct-09-11|| ||Raffaello71: Hallo all!
Please help me!
I think Chess Wiewer Deluxe is a wonderful program.
The tool I like most is the possibility to follow different variations/lines of play with a clic.
I would like to use this tool to create MY PERSONAL TREE OF CHOSEN VARIATIONS for every opening the opponent could play.
Still best if I could also annotate them.
But, in order to do so, I shoud use Chess Viewer Deluxe offline. Is it possible?
Or do you know some other program with the same tools that I could download?
(I have a Mac)
|Jan-01-12|| ||gauer: Not sure whether CVD is the viewer the iPhone (4S) that the site defaults to. A double-click on those types of phones calls a zoom in to an already large board, and the review game moves' forward/back buttons in a portrait setting in that screen might see the buttons positioned to a side column (rather than near the pgn-text). Is piece-dragging to see sidelines supported here on that board type? Is it possible to set a preference on a phone platform to see a text-only option there in place of the board, and remember alternate prefs for the same userid of the site on a different platform? Happy new year!|
|Jan-11-12|| ||ECHOOooo: It would be great if the user could choose the delay to use between moves in auto-play mode -- perhaps set in the user-profile settings. I'd personally like 10-15 secs between moves, to give me some time to think about what the next move might be before it's made. Might be a nice "premium-user" benefit.|
|Feb-09-12|| ||kia0708: there are so many dead links in this thread and on google
"Sorry, the GeoCities web site you were trying to reach is no longer available."|
|Feb-18-12|| ||Viewer Deluxe: In case you haven't found it yet,
games of "Bunratty Masters 2012" are being broadcasted live on my blog at http://chesstuff.blogspot.com/2012/...
As usual, you can enjoy on-the-fly FENs and PGNs.
|Mar-28-12|| ||whiteknight09: Help! Why can I no longer play games using the chess viewer? Did my membership lapse or am I missing a piece of software?|
|Apr-30-12|| ||chriso0258: I am creating a a website and would like to include CVD on the site. However, I'm running into problems getting it to work on a Joomla 2.5 website? The browser actually prints the code on the webpage. I have tried using custom html module and plugins to allow code but to no avail. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!|
|May-01-12|| ||Viewer Deluxe: Hi <chriso0258>,
The dynamic applet creation is much easier to integrate. Just follow the instructions http://chesstuff.blogspot.com/2008/.... This is the same method which CG.com refers to as “CVD II”. Not to mention that it’s fully cross browser compatible as opposed to the deprecated APPLET tags.
|May-04-12|| ||chriso0258: Thanks for your reply. I did read those instructions and am still confused. I am using Joomla for my CMS. I'm afraid I'm still confused as to where to put the code. My site has one main template css. If I put the code in the site's template.css, then how would I get the CV on a particular page? If I don't put it in the template.css, where then?
Thanks for your patience.|
|May-05-12|| ||Viewer Deluxe: As a proof of concept you can include the main JS and the CV section one in the same post. It should work but make sure you edit in HTML mode (or whatever Joomla is calling it). Then you may be able to find a better place for the main JS – something like page header, template, layout. I’m not familiar with Joomla so I can’t help you there. You may be interested to see how CVD integration works with WordPress and, ideally, you may be able to do similar for Joomla. I’m not suggesting you try the WP solution on Joomla (that’s not going to work) so it all depends on your experience.|
|May-08-12|| ||chriso0258: I think I'm getting closer. I got another viewer's script to work but not yours. I would prefer your viewer. The other script can be found at http://gameknot.com/pg/chess-tools..... I put your chess viewer stub code in my template.css file. I then used your html code generator on a pgn file and put that on my webpage but it doesn't seem to pick up the js. in the template.css file. I also tried including the stub code in with the html script but that didn't work either. Maybe if you look at the other viewer you can tell me what's the same/different and I can use that information to make corrections. Just a thought.|
|May-08-12|| ||chriso0258: Never mind. I got it to work. Thank you for all your time. One last question, is there a way your viewer can be configured so a user viewing our site can input their own pgn file data?|
|May-13-12|| ||chriso0258: Couple of questions:
1. I noticed that on chessgames.com they can create a link on their home page to a game. How can I create links to games on my website?
2. Is there a way for a website visitor to copy and paste the contents of a pgn file into the viewer to view their own game?
|May-13-12|| ||WannaBe: <chriso0258> If you right click on the box score section, you will see options to copy or paste PGNs.|
|May-16-12|| ||Viewer Deluxe: <chriso0258> Yes, the solution that <WannaBe> suggests is available in every CVD instance. I have a feeling that your questions are about Web development. That whole field is not a subject we can discuss here. There are many good books that can help.|
|May-28-12|| ||chriso0258: When I was viewing my website with some friends we noticed that your viewer did not show up on his iPad3. Have you had any other reports of this? Is there a setting in his iPad browser that needs to be set? I don't know if this applies to other iPad models as well. |
|Sep-19-12|| ||qstone: Hi, CVD is great. I like it a lot. One question, how to make the dark square color solid? Thanks.|
|Sep-20-12|| ||Calli: Hello, I have been entering a lot of date and round data for CG.|
Sub-rounds on scorecards. Some of the old tournaments require a number like "12.2", but four characters are not visible in the "rnd" box. See, for instance, Alapin vs J Mason, 1901
Make the "Score" box narrower and the Rnd box wider. It is really not a "score". It is a "result". Perhaps replacing the word "Score" with "R" or "Rsl" or "Rslt". All are valid abbreviations for "Result".
|Sep-21-12|| ||Viewer Deluxe: Hi <Calli>,
I never heard of sub-rounds. I believe the fractional part is board numbers. In fact, as more and more games are made available from bigger tournaments, we recently had one with 120 boards. In that case the box would contain “12.120”. I’m sure we can agree not to try and display it. I find it even more annoying when the site or the event field gets truncated. Let’s face it – if we want a concise game header with brief details we have to compromise.
Frankly, you can always “Copy” the PGN source to the clipboard and have the full PGN text. The entire round field will be there if you insist on having it.
On the other hand, if you mean to open a bigger discussion, here’s one possible direction. Quite often in various Chess Media we mix various fields into one, for example: site “Geneva, SUI”; player “Magnus Carlsen (GM)” or worse “Magnus Carlsen (2823)”. The last example shows a deep misunderstanding of PGN at all. Even when the standard clearly defined WhiteElo as a separate field, people still go and “improve” it in their own way.
For the record, every 101 entry level class on databases will discourage mixing apples and oranges (called Atomicity). The round information above is no exception – board numbers have nothing to do with round numbers and shouldn’t be mixed together.
Just my take
|Jan-15-13|| ||bondll: Question for Chessgames experts:
In Chess Viewer Deluxe, how do I change the board color from orange to green?
|Jan-15-13|| ||hms123: <bondll>
Start here: Chessgames Preferences Page
right under your email address you will find this:
<Configure the colors of the chessboard: (optional)
If you want to customize the color of the board, you can do that here.
Dark Squares: #
Light Squares: #
You should be able to figure it out from there--hms
|Mar-23-13|| ||DrNyet: I have seen mentions of CVD II but no announcement. What was changed?|
|Mar-25-13|| ||Viewer Deluxe: No new functionality on the viewer’s side. Main changes are in the browser integration – getting rid of APPLET tags chessgames.com chessforum and improving the game loading time chessgames.com chessforum. The latter makes a bigger difference when entire tournaments are loaded. The boost is modest for loading a single game (the way CVD is being used here on CG.com).|
