 | | WarmasterKron: <FICS Woodpusher> Interesting comments, but note that 1.e4 d5 2.Nc3 Nf6 is probably fine for Black. I'm not too sure if the Knight is where White wants it to be on c3 (after 2...Qxa5, presumably), but I can tell you that it's exactly where Black wants it to be! |
 |
May-17-07
 | | FICSwoodpusher: <WarmasterKron> most players would definitely be happy playing that with the black pieces, or at least they should be. Thats the thing about me, I don't always like openings that I should. These days I play openings that easily allow black to equalise. What I am trying to do is to enjoy my game more, instead of trying to force my opponent to enjoy his game less. I don't know if that makes sense, but what I am trying to say is that I try not to think about the result of the game but more about the enjoyment of my chess. In the above example and interesting game would be 1. e4 d5 2. Nc3 Nf6 3. e5?! ... I might try 1. e4 d5 2. Nc3 Nf6 3. pxp Nxp 4. Bc4 ... |
 |
May-18-07
 | | WarmasterKron: I tend to play openings that I enjoy and am comfortable with, without a care whether mainstream theory considers them sound. Dubious means playable, to paraphrase Tartakower. 1.e4 d5 2.Nc3 Nf6 3.e5 looks good fun. I'd possibly go for 3...Nfd7 and if 4.f4 f6!? - a bit like 1.e4 d5 2.exd5 Nf6 3.c4 c6!? 1.e4 d5 2.Nc3 Nf6 3.exd5 Nxd5 4.Bc4 (4.Nxd5?! is probably better for Black) is also interesting. 4...Nxc3 looks quite drawish, which is no fun, but 4...Nb6 will probably lead to some original positions. After 5.Bb3, Black has the sensible ...Nc6 or the provactive ...a5!?, as in Leko vs S Grunberg, 1990. |

 | | FICSwoodpusher: With the black pieces I'm still not 100% settled on an opening. Against e4 I would mostly play the philidor and sometimes the french. Against d4 I would probably go with the nimzo indian but it seems that d4 games give me more problems now. It's funny because I always used to be more comfortable against d4 and I didn't know what to play against e4. In searching for an opening to use against e4 I even tried the Nimzowitsch defence: 1. e4 Nc6 which seemed like a good opening to play, especially the line 1. e4 Nc5 2. d4 d5 3. e5 I liked this variation from a theoretical point of view but I could never get any good results from it. I thought that would confuse my opponent but as it turns out I was the only one being confused. |
 |
May-19-07
 | | WarmasterKron: The Nimzo is a perfectly valid defence if you ask me, but after my usual 2.f4, the willingness of its internet practitioners to play 2...e5?! is quite bizarre. I don't know of many people who would play 2...Nc6 after 1.e4 e5 2.f4, but it's the same thing. Not that I'm complaining of course, I just play 3.Nf3 and enjoy the rest of the opening! |
 |
May-20-07
 | | FICSwoodpusher: <WarmasterKron> I have played a similar opening with the white pieces: 1. Nf3 f5 2. e4 pxp 3. Ng5 d5 . So when played with the black pieces it would be white to move, where the kingside can be defended with 4. Nf3 ... (obviously not 4. h3 ...). After 3. Nf3 e4 what are your thoughts on this position? |

Fancy a drink some time this week? |

 | | WarmasterKron: <mack> Sounds good. I'm free tomorrow, Thursday and Friday. Same place as before? |
 |
May-29-07
 | | mack: It'll have to be tomorrow, I think. What time? |
 |
May-29-07
 | | WarmasterKron: About eightish should give me enough time to get home and changed after work and into town. Barring gale-force winds, of course. |

 | | kellmano: I see you boys have neglected to invite me this time. Only joking, would be good to catch up for another chess session soon though. I am playing Golders with a friend of mine on June the 9th if either of you fancies it. |

 | | kellmano: <Kron> Defo up for a game and beer on the South Coast sometime. I'm currently marking A level papers, but i'll be finished that by next weekend (20th or something). By that time I will be on Summer holiday as well, so any day of the week is fine. Know anyone else who will come? We could try for a tourney. |
 |
Jul-11-07
 | | WarmasterKron: Hm, not really. I'm sure <mack> would be up for it, but I don't know of anyone else. Stick a message on the Cafe and we'll see if anyone fancies a trip to sunny(?) Brighton. In other news, blunder watch part 2:

Jul-12-07
 | | mack: <Know anyone else who will come? We could try for a tourney.> Word up. I'd definitely be up for an impromptu weekend tourney upstairs in a Brighton pub in the not too distant future. If we had, say, six of us then we could make a real go of it. I can think of perhaps two others who might want to play. |
 |
Jul-12-07
 | | kellmano: I actually have some vague chess associates in Brighton now. And one of them has a clock (a very nice one). Lost my phone the other day with everyone's number in though, so I will have to rely on bumping into them. I would propose 28th or 29th of July as a suitable weekend day. Any preferences? |
 |
Jul-12-07
 | | mack: Interesting. Saturdays would be better for me, but the 27th is my birthday and in likelihood I'll be useless on the 28th. I'll have a think about it. I'm most definitely for this plan in one shape or another. |
 |
Jul-12-07
 | | kellmano: Wow. We're online at the same time. Once you have a weekend in mind let me know and i'll tell you if i'm free. I'm going on holiday at some point this Summer, but i don't know when yet. |

 | | JDK: Hi <WarmasterKron>, Thanks for the games. You know I think I was really lucky to get away with the draw, but as I am not sure, I am going to spend some time analysing it at my forum. I am useless at endgames so hopefully some bright minds might pop in and help out. Until our next duel! :) p.s. Brighton is just down the coast from me :) A much nice place to play chess than Pompey! |
 |
| Aug-02-07 | | Dr.Lecter: <warmaster> that game really happened in a tourament? Wish I had an opponent like that. |
