Zahir Ahmadov, Baku, Azerbaijan. I used to spend more time on this web site some years ago mostly because I found cg.com as a great resource from where I could learn a lot of chess. Then, this web site became part of my life as I found very good friends through it (the title of the forum is no co-incidence). It has always been very nice to communicate with these friends, among whom I would name <Switch>, <brankat>, <kuda>, <tarlan>, <lostemperor> etc. I think virtual friendship is missing something important in human communication, which encouraged me to meet some of these people in real life, both in Azerbaijan and overseas.

Currently, I am having time constraints to spend time on this forum, but my recent extension of premium membership encourages me to take measures to be present here more frequently. Lets see if this will be possible in the near future.

ahmadov: Yes, that is true. Sometimes I lose because I am too optimistic about positions that look tempting, but do not give much play, the one we have just discussed.

If you're suddenly <really> into watching athletics, you can watch the Götzis combined events meeting live here: http://tvthek.orf.at/live/4085597

ahmadov: <SwitchingQuylthulg><If you're suddenly <really> into watching athletics, you can watch the Götzis combined events meeting live here> Thank you for providing that link.
I am not a great fan of athletics, but my recent involvement in that event where both Jackson and Davis were involved, created some interest in me to that field of sports. I am impetiently waiting for the London Olympics to follow some of the athletics contests there. I will definitely root for Turkey and Bolts, but if you do some good presentation of your sportsmen I can also follow the Finish athlets in London 2012. Meanwhile, I wonder how important athletics in Finland. I always thought ice hokkey is the main field of sport you are good at.

SwitchingQuylthulg: Ice hockey is indeed Finland's top sport in terms of both popularity and quality players. Athletics used to be huge back in the day (before WW2) when the Finnish were winning Olympic medals right and left, but unfortunately our team never really recovered from the war. It's still pretty popular (much more so than in Azerbaijan) but it's hurt by our lack of any really world class athletes.

Javelin throw has for a long time been considered a Finnish speciality, and that's where most of our recent successes have been, but unfortunately right now we don't have a real top guy even in that event. However, we do have several throwers quite close to the top, and I'm hoping some of them will emerge as serious Olympic contenders :)

Outside men's javelin our Oly prospects are very bleak, any medals would be real surprises. Jarkko Kinnunen is showing somewhat promising form in the walks but has yet to prove he can duke it out with the real world top.

Any thoughts on Mare Dibaba making the ultra-strong Ethiopian squad in the women's marathon? You may recall she briefly represented Azerbaijan :)

This might help you follow the Götzis meeting: http://vorarlberg-sport.orf.at/inde...

Among these Ethiopian girls I know best Elvan Abeylegesse who represents Turkey. This is mostly because athletism is much more popular in Turkey than in Azerbaijan and probably also because she has much better achievements than any other of these girls representing either Azerbaijan or Turkey.

SwitchingQuylthulg: Well, Götzis has this year's strongest decathlon/heptathlon fields outside of the Olympics, so if you're interested in those it's well worth watching... but I don't think there's anybody from Azerbaijan or Turkey competing, and combined events - like chess - are somewhat of an acquired taste :-)

ahmadov: <Götzis has this year's strongest decathlon/heptathlon fields outside of the Olympics> Yes, I heard something about this sports. Is this not something invented newly? At least, it must be a younger type of sports than running, swimming and bisycling, no?

SwitchingQuylthulg: Well, decathlon in its current form is about 100 years old... but it's a direct descendant of the mainly American "all-around" which goes another couple decades back, and combined events as a sport go back all the way to the ancient Greek pentathlon, which debuted at the Olympics in 708 BC ;-)

ahmadov: By the way, you must be a man of complex nature if you show interest both in athletics and chess at the same time. Is it a good logic?

SwitchingQuylthulg: <ahmadov> Oh, I don't know... the way I see it, athletics and chess have much more in common with each other than either of them has with, say, football. The only real difference is that one mostly depends on the head while the other asks more of the rest of the body.

Endgame Explorer: RB vs R

SwitchingQuylthulg: <ahmadov> It depends on the position :)

As a general rule, R+B vs. R is drawn, although it can be very hard to defend accurately (knowing a good fortress helps, though even then you'll have to be careful). On the other hand, when it's not drawn it can be extremely hard to win :) It really is a very tough ending to play, even for grandmasters (and consider they quite often get it in time trouble!).

Wikipedia has an article on this endgame: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rook_a...

ahmadov: <SwitchingQuylthulg> Thanks for your advice on the ending. This means I have to offer draw in one of my online games :-) (I am a bishop up there)
