I am a chess history buff. I agree with Gligoric, who said that chess serves best as a hobby, and can take up too much time if a person gives it too much importance.

Jan-10-08 Chigorin vs Schiffers, 1880 (replies)

akiba82: <Amarande> You are correct, the game appears on p158-9 of the Tartakower book.

Jul-15-06 Baron Krudner vs Prince Dadian, 1881 (replies)

akiba82: It seems Tchigorin had published some articles which poked holes in some of Dadian's brilliancies and the Prince was furious. Tchigorin was at least indemnified by an amount greater than 3rd prize for the tournament. He was also invited to play at Vienna 1903. This tournament ...

Dec-28-05 Bird vs Falkbeer, 1856 (replies)

akiba82: <nsteinme> If 29. Bb5+ Kf7 30.Qd4 then 31...Rg5+ and eventually Rh8#. White can only delay three moves by interposing pieces which get taken. Black was the originator of the Falkbeer Countergambit, so you know he was full of tricks!

Dec-13-05 Dubois vs Steinitz, 1862 (replies)

akiba82: As fred lennox pointed out, 21...Ne4, was much better than 21...Qe8. After the text move 21...Qe8, White could have played 22. Bf5+ Kb8 23. Re1, with a good game.

   Apr-17-05 Menchik vs G A Thomas, 1936 (replies)

akiba82: So far cant find an official game where Menchik defeated Vidmar, so maybe it was another player who started the Menchik club.

   Mar-27-05 Colin Crouch (replies)

akiba82: His book on Hastings 1895 was also very good. Wish he would write a book on Bradford 1888 or Weisbaden 1880.

   Mar-17-05 J Mason vs Bird, 1895 (replies)

akiba82: <AgentRgent> Yes, regrettably. It's a shame he didn't get to play a match with Steinitz or Zukertort in 1882. He entered into negotiations with both but apparently had trouble raising the stake money. He had not yet fallen into alcohol abuse at the time. Probably some good ...

   Mar-17-05 J Mason vs Janowski, 1902 (replies)

akiba82: He was drunk when he beat J.W.Baird at N.Y.1889. Not a bad game either. Like Alekhine he seems to have been able to play in that condition.

   Mar-17-05 Paulsen vs J Mason, 1882 (replies)

akiba82: Mason had a fine record against Paulsen, and this is perhaps the most interesting game between the two of them. Paulsen may have been the best player in the world around 1870. By the time he met Mason in the 1880's he was well past his prime. Still, Mason was able to demonstrate ...

   Mar-05-05 J Mason vs Wittek, 1882

akiba82: 34Kg3 and 36Rc1 White engineers a change of front. The main theater of war is now the c-file and h1-a8 diagonal. Black with his misplaced rooks is unable to respond. The rapid change of front seen in this game was not so common in the nineteenth century as it was later to become. ...
