I'm a graduate student at Queen's (Kingston, Ontario) studying astronomy. I used to play quite often but drifted away and only recently regained interest in chess. I don't play much anymore, but I like chess puzzles and following the international chess scene and the always colourful world of chess politics.

I'm now a premium member! I feel so...liberated.

Nov-06-09 Niebult vs Tal, 1954 (replies)

arctic tern: <White must have been out to lunch when he played 29. Ne4 in this game.> White doesn't have many options, as Black is threatening both Bf1+ and Bf5+ and White can't defend against both simultaneously.

arctic tern: From the Wikipedia entry: <Dreyer represented South Africa in Chess Olympiads at Munich 1958, Tel Aviv 1964, Havana 1966, and Siegen 1970 despite being deceased.> Mighty impressive for a deceased player to score 5/10 at the 1970 Olympiad.

arctic tern: This seems to be the same person who is well known for his work on direct N-body codes (which not far off my own research). Good to see a famous astronomer on CG! http://adsabs.harvard.edu/cgi-bin/n... , S. J.&db_key=AST

Jul-03-09 Rybka vs Shredder, 2009 (replies)

arctic tern: <Didn't Shredder beat Michael Adams pretty badly?> You're thinking of Hydra.

   May-15-09 M-Tel Masters (2009) (replies)

arctic tern: <he dresses bad, very often forgets to shave> <he's socially awkward, borderline autistic> er, and these are legitimate reasons to dislike him?

May-08-09 Kupreichik vs Rashkovsky, 1986 (replies)

arctic tern: <sleepyirv: Oddly, "Nuke Dukem Forever" was recently cancelled after a decade in development. Great pun!> That should of course be "Duke Nukem". My first thought when I saw the pun: Hey, the CG staff are video game nerds!

   Apr-29-09 A Burjan vs A Kornelia, 1992 (replies)

arctic tern: <Shams: guys the Bf4 covers the b8 square.> Which means it's time for bed...

Feb-01-09 Wang Yue vs Carlsen, 2009 (replies)

arctic tern: Chess seems to be the only sport where it's considered bad sportsmanship to keep playing when you're down. Why on earth is that? Does Man U feel insulted when their opponents play on after Man score a couple of goals?

   Jan-28-09 A Giri vs T Hillarp Persson, 2009 (replies)

arctic tern: 26...Qh3! and White can't save the bishop. If 27.Bb5 then ...Rxc3+ is deadly.

   Jan-27-09 Corus (2009) (replies)

arctic tern: <AdrianP: Is it just me or does anyone else think that Howell plays really weird chess?> No it's not just you. How on Earth he managed to win 5 games up to now is beyond me. Maybe he enjoys living on the edge.
