May-29-13 V Zvjaginsev vs Bologan, 2010
| |
backrank: 35 Qxf8+ Qxf8 36 e7
How painful this must be for Black!!

| | May-29-13 Wolfgang Heidenfeld
| |
backrank: <JimNorCal: The book "Draw" is excellent. It went lost in my local library--it had been misfiled in the "Art" section. Someone must have thought the book was about drawing and sketching.> *smile*
Heidenfeld was an excellent author. He regarded the drawn game as the perfect ...

| | May-20-13 Pilnik vs Najdorf, 1942
| |
backrank: And of course, many thanks to <FSR> for liking it and making it GOTD.

| | May-18-13 Edgar Colle
| |
backrank: Reinfeld's book on Colle is rather good:
Game Collection: Colle's chess masterpieces by Fred Reinfeld Maybe it's still the only book on this remarkable attacking player?

| | May-05-13 Rudolf Spielmann
| |
backrank: Yes, I remember that quote well ... as a scientist, it kept me stunned :D

| | Mar-27-13 Tartakower vs Spielmann, 1926
| |
backrank: Unfortunately, 42 Kd1 is not a legal move.
And why was Spielmann's Queen sac unnecessary? Besides the fact that it wasn't much of a sac, R+B+2P (one of them a passed pawn) being more than an equivalent for the Q ...

backrank: 23. Rc1 (as Honza suggests in the very 1st post) is illegal as well ...

| | Mar-10-13 Fred Reinfeld
| |
backrank: Last night I had a dream: Reinfeld had in fact published a book of his own best games, but they were faked. All the games in the book turned out having in fact been played by some unknown German player called Sternheim or Stelkheim (someone told me the name in my dream, but I ...

| | Feb-20-13 Keres vs Sachsenmaier, 1934
| |
backrank: According to Reinfeld (Keres' Best Games of Chess), Black resigned after 31 Qf5+. The remaining moves seem to be a variation. I doubt Keres would have played 36 Qxg7 instead of the stronger 36 Qxd6.

| | Feb-18-13 Alekhine vs Verlinsky, 1918
| |
backrank: In Chernev's 'Combinations: The Heart of Chess' the position after Black's 28th move is given, but with Black's QR on f8 rather than on c8.
So I suspect that Black's 20th move had in fact been Rdf8 instead of Rdc8 as given here. Probably a mis-translation from descriptive notation ...
