Greetings! I'm located in Phoenix. Pillsbury ranks as one of my all-time favorite players. He was a classic example of an inspired genius whose life cut short early on.

   May-31-13 E Berg vs Hector, 2012 (replies)

bengalcat47: Another way for the White king to escape the checks is 30.Rxe5 fxe5; 31.Rd7 Qb1+; 32.Kg2, Qe4+; 33. f3, Qxe2+; 34.Kh3,Qf1+; 35.Kh4,Qc4+; 36.f4! Now there are no more checks and since White threatens mate at g7 Black must give up his Queen for the Rook.

May-28-13 Taimanov vs E Cobo Arteaga, 1967 (replies)

bengalcat47: After the Black King moves to g5, White mates with f4. To use a term from the late Tom Wiswell in one of his many books on checkers, such is "the power of the common man!"

   May-21-13 Korchnoi vs I Krush, 2007 (replies)

bengalcat47: Korchnoi got "krushed" by Irina!

   May-17-13 Fischer vs W Beach, 1963 (replies)

bengalcat47: It is not recommended to use an obsolete opening such as the King's Fianchetto Defense, which dates back to Morphy's era, when playing against someone as proficient as a cartain Bobby Fischer.

   Apr-27-13 Bogoljubov vs Saemisch, 1938

bengalcat47: <gambitfan> My favorite book on this subject is Yuri Averbakh's book "Queen and Pawn Endings."

   Apr-22-13 F Olafsson vs Pilnik, 1957 (replies)

bengalcat47: Very nicely done by Olafsson. In their only other game Pilnik got his revenge with an impressive win in a hard-fought Queen and Pawn endgame.

Apr-20-13 Shredder vs Gull, 2013 (replies)

bengalcat47: Anyone up for shredded gull?

   Apr-16-13 P Krylov vs J Kozma, 1950

bengalcat47: This game is featued in Reinfeld's book "Modern Ideas in the Chess Openings."

   Apr-14-13 Robert Eugene Byrne (replies)

bengalcat47: RIP, Master Byrne. Sorry that he didn't quite make it to his 85th birthday, but he lived a very long and full life. He shall be remembered as one of the great ones in American chess.

   Apr-12-13 Max Euwe (replies)

bengalcat47: Have any other books been written about Euwe's games besides his own, "From My Games, 1920-1937"? I have this book in my collection, and it's nice to study the games and read Euwe's comments on his own games, but the book only covers a very small part of his illustrious career. ...
