tpstar: <Chnebelgrind> I really enjoyed your Game Collection: best of 2017 and awarded each game one point in our Game Collection: Best Games of 2017 contest. For 2018, if you want to create a Top Ten list, you may note those positions in your Game Collection, or else vote in the bgitw chessforum next January. Thank you very much.

  zborris8: <tpstar: For our K-12 teaching program, we encourage 1. e4 e5 every game>

Why do you do encourage that and not something more sensible like 1.d4 d5?

tpstar: A: The seventh opening principle is Castle Early/King Safety. When juniors get killed out of the opening, it's because they never bothered to castle which safeguards their King in the corner.

Once they are rated over 1000, they may play whatever they want. 1. d4 openings are more positional and more strategic, plus it takes much longer to castle compared to 1. e4 games.

zborris8: <tpstar: Once they are rated over 1000> I didn't think it went that low. Thanks for the info!

Oh, btw, which games are against your students and which games are against opponents of equal rating?

  tpstar: <zborris8> "I think it's your English."

My Kindergarten students are ages 5-6. If you really think I'm going to throw a Queen's Gambit book in their direction and have them play 1. d4 when they are still learning about castling and en passant capture, then that approach is not reasonable.

These are unrated G/15 practice games against my students, most of whom have a three-digit rating, while a few have a two-digit rating. Beginners have to unlearn all of the bad advice their parents and uncles taught them, like 1. h4 & 2. Rh3, then baby steps as they improve.

Speaking of Webster, two of my students drew against Susan Polgar in 2009 during a simultaneous exhibition. She would remember.

zborris8: I didn't mean anything harsh. I had been studying a game that was posted by another member so I thought I could compare some of your games to help me determine how strong this game actually was - but if you're playing against low-rated players then your probability of fine-play increases from opponent blunders. So that would be hard to compare.

The remark "I didn't think it went that low" was by Bobby Fischer in his retort to Jackie Collins sister Ethel who'd sometimes make Strawberry Shortcake from scratch for Bobby during events. He had once asked her what her rating was and she said, "1000", to which he replied, "I didn't think it went that low."

This is how Bobby felt about women in general, maybe you've seen it already, it's a rare interview by Bob Quintrell, 1962 (not 1963): https://archive.org/details/bfischer
