Branko Katic. Born and raised in former Yugoslavia, I have been living in Vancouver, B.C., Canada, for the last 30 years. Used to play chess actively when I was a teenager, and was awarded a Candidate Master title in 1970.

I "retired" a year later, mostly due to University studies and never participated in tournaments again. Instead I got a degree in History and Social Anthropology, which didn't do me much good :-)

I had neither played chess, nor followed chess events for more than 30 years. Until, by chance, I discovered this great site: Chessgames.com in 2005.

A fellow CG.com member, and a friend, WILSON HU User: CHESSMORON, organized a double round-robin tourney: <The MASTERS vs. the MACHINES>, February - April, 2007. It was my privilege and an honour to be on the Masters team with FIDE Master ERIC SCHILLER Eric Schiller and the USCF Master BILL WALL Bill Wall!

<A few of my favourite Chess related quotes>:

"If Acoustics was a science that informed the world about sounds, then Music was an art that revealed the beauty of that science; if Logic was a science that revealed the laws of Thought, then Chess, in the form of artistic images, was an art that illuminated the logical side of thought."

"The chess player who has lost his game - who will describe him? I have seen him unable to move. The public was long gone, the lights were out, and still he sat rigidly in his chair staring at the emptied board, because he had overlooked Bg2. A case of complete petrification, with bystanders whispering and tiptoeing by.

I have heard him begging for punishment in blasphemous language. He had forgotten Nh5, and in his dismay he called down annihilation upon himself. Derisively, he rejected our words of solace, demanding insults and chastisements.

Standing afar and horror-stricken, I have witnessed him swearing in orgiastic fury to rip off his genitals, because he had played Qf6 instead of Qb6."

"Of my 57 years, I’ve applied at least 30 to forgetting most of what I've learned or read, and since I succeeded in this I have acquired a certain ease and cheer which I should never again like to be without.

If need be, I can increase my skill in chess, if need be I can do that of which I have no idea present.

I have stored little in my memory, but I can apply that little, and it is of good use in many and varied emergencies. I keep it in order, but resist every attempt to increase its dead weight."

Whereas split personalities might be appropriate - it isn't really my area of expertise.

I'm probably going to do something with persuasive design.

eHealth [eg interventions via internet] is booming, but most interventions aren't that well designed. Sometimes the message might be effective, but the method to get/keep people interested is seen as a big black box; strange and scary.

So generally half of the people during trials fall out.

It's therefore quite important to make the design and functionality persuasive to use. Should improve adherence and therefore the effect of the intervention.

That's all very new and has a lot of potential - so I'm going to do something in that direction ;)

Every young generation is bad news! A young generation always seems to want something new and different. It's beyond me why. They want to change the World! Like it's not bad enough as is :-)

For some inexplicable reason they refuse to listen to, and rely on the time tested wisdom of their elders :-)

Good LUCK with the eHealth. You could find a lot of clients right here on this very site :-)

brankat: A jewel from <Hugin>'s forum:

Top Ten Reasons To Vote in American Presidential Elections: (applicable to other "Democracies" as well.)

10. You can pretend to help decide which CIA-groomed figurehead will front for the banksters during the next four years.

9. If the rigged voting machines break down, your vote might actually be counted.

8. With a bumpersticker like “Don’t blame me, I voted for Cynthia McKinney” (or your favorite 3rd party candidate) you’ll feel superior to the sheeple for the next four years.

7. Poking little holes in computer cards is good exercise for the muscles in your hands and wrists – and since you only do it every four years, you won’t get repetitive motion syndrome.

6. Voting offers an opportunity to do your civic duty: While standing in line waiting to vote, you can hand out 9/11 truth DVDs and explain to the sheeple that if voting changed anything, they’d make it illegal.

5. If each of the two major party candidates gets exactly fifty million votes not counting yours, your vote will determine which candidate can brag about getting the most votes. Unfortunately, due to the mysteries of the electoral college system, getting the most votes has nothing to do with being elected President.

4. You’ll get to play a minor role in an outrageous, over-the-top farce, without having to get yourself hired as an extra in a Mel Brooks movie.

3. Since your vote has no effect whatsoever on the actual governance of the nation, you can go ahead and vote without feeling guilty about the mass murders and genocide that the government is guaranteed to keep right on perpetrating, regardless of the electoral outcome.

2. You can cast a write-in vote for a relatively honest president of some relatively honest country, like Hugo Chavez or Fidel Castro or Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and hope that your local newspaper will mention it along with the write-in votes for Donald Duck, Ted Nugent, Ted Kaczynski, OJ Simpson, and Mishka the Talking Dog.

1. Casting a meaningless vote in a system rigged to victimize people like you is better than masturbation: It allows you to screw yourself, without requiring you to assume an anatomically impossible position and risk serious injury.

Aug-16-12  N0B0DY: Vote for <N0B0DY>!

Nobody will keep election promises
Nobody will listen to your concerns
Nobody will help the poor and unemployed
Nobody cares!

If nobody is elected, things will be better for everyone!

NOBODY TELLS THE TRUTH

dakgootje: <Is the idea to make people healthier? Or is it to maintain your job?>

Like many professions - the ideal is making yourself superfluous.

A scientist wants to know the truth - and if everything would be known, he would be out of a job. Airplane designers want to make the best airplane - after which they wouldn't be needed anymore. Heh, even politicians are supposed to make the perfect policy.

<Good LUCK with the eHealth.>

  twinlark: <Branko>

Here's the revised bio: Svetozar Gligoric.

This is by no means complete, as I have been unable to find a complete record of his tournament achievements outside of the Olympiads and the World Championship cycle. Also, I'm pretty sure he authored other books and there are many other important opening variations in which he had a hand in developing.

Please let me know if there are any mistakes or if there is any additional material you think should be included. If you have any anecdotes, post them on your forum and I can link the post(s) to the sources at the foot of the bio.

brankat: <twinlark> Great work on such a short notice! Thank You.

I read the text a moment ago, mostly at a glance, and will have to review it again with more attention to detail, possible inaccuracies, lacking info etc. Will let You know within a couple of hours.

I met Gligoric, and had conversations with him on 7 occasions. So there is plenty of anecdotal material, good portion of it of a personal nature. Probably not quite suitable for the Bio format we have here at CG.com.

But I can post at least some of it either here or at Gligoric's Player's page, and then You can decide whether You want to provide a link in the Bio.

Once again, thank You.

  brankat: <WannaBe> Thanks Jimmy.

Now You are approaching what is probably the most interesting part of the book: Sep-01-1939 to (roughly) June-22-1941.

It is a good idea to read the material slowly, even re-read some sections, if necessary, because there is so much information there to "digest".
