dotsamoht: <parmetd> Yifan has the title. After the winner of this speculative event is crowned, she has to face Yifan in a championship match. Yifan will defeat easily whoever wins. This entire process is simply a means for creating intrigue in a competition totally dominated by Yifan

dotsamoht: Anyone that disparages Judit Polgar's chess simply based on her gender is a misogynist who should be ignored. Judit is one of the most gifted players alive, able to beat any of the top players in a given game. All Hail Judit Polgar, Goddess of Chess. She is Caissa in the flesh!

dotsamoht: I agree with Eyal that 17...Nc6 should have been played, despite the fact that 18. dxc6 was winning. In World Championship play, the mood often matters more than the actual position. 17...Nc6 would have shifted the mood from "Wow, the queen is trapped!" to "Oh... she escapes after

dotsamoht: Black should have stuck to Morozevich's 10...Nc6. There is no time for 10...c5, as Ding showed. Tremendous game, even if Black called forth the dragon with ...g6, begging for Bxg6.

crawfb5: I put a reply on <kutztown46>'s forum, but just to give our new Mr. Sticky a heads up...

<ajile> has a link in his forum header to a FEN reverser. It's http://www.zbestvalue.com/ChessFENR...

Very easy to use, if you decide to go with Black at the bottom of the board.

I know you've already had other suggestions for creating FENs, but let me plug my favorite: DiagTransfer: http://alain.blaisot.free.fr/DiagTr...

It has one feature I really like -- a semi-transparent mode. You can lay it over a diagram in another program, size the board the same, and then drag and drop pieces in place while still able to see the underlying diagram.

Whatever you do, don't do FENs manually (well, ok, maybe a couple just to convince yourself you understand how they work :-).

No hurry on this, but when you get a chance, please remove the link to <zanshin>'s forum from the sticky. I have discussed it with him by email and he agrees.

My motivation is to keep the sticky short enough that team members can see the entire sticky without having to scroll down. As it is right now, it depends on monitor size and resolution. At home, I can see the entire sticky but I have a larger monitor. At work, I have a smaller monitor and I have to scroll.

Thanks!

Thanks for your support.

I do not do FENs by hand since I worry about mistakes.

I will look into your Diag link.

Right now I use Gameknot's analysis feature and export the FEN.

When I tried the ReverseFEN link, I could not open the page. I will try again.

Sep-17-08  Xenon Oxide: <I was kind of wondering about this as I updated the Sticky. <kutztown46> and others want the Sticky as tidy as possible, so I overwrote the temporary fora.

Instead of this, do you think I should leave the temporary fora for the move before? So on the Sticky we would have a set of current temporary fora and a set of immediately-previous temporary fora.>

No, I think it would be too untidy then. It will be a mess, with nobody quite being able to find things quickly. I think a sticky is used for quick notices and shortcuts, not storing lots of info. <kutztown> should have the previous forum assignments in his header, in any rate.

<I worry, as I think you do, that if, say, <Red October> hosts a temporary forum one month but not the next, valuable information in his forum needed on the next move might be overlooked.>

<Kutztown> said that he will keep "mainlines" within one forum. So, if Red October hosted a mainline, then whenever a new move is made she will continue to host the "main move" forum. That way, a larger percentage of analysis could be preserved linearly. At least, that is my interpretation of how it works.

Anyhow, you could ask him about that, I'm not really the expert in that area. I'm just a poor crier :)

zanshin: <Have I not been doing this? What should I do? Last Move Link? I just updated the current position link.>

<dotsamoht> It's a little different. If you go to the GMT game, you can see what the Last Move link looks like. (Actually, I just looked and it seems forgot about updating it at the end of the game ;-))

The Last move link points to the post that <CG> makes when the move is updated. There was some interest in it last game, but I don't know if it's worth doing anymore. It seems the person or persons who were interested in it have stopped participating. Honestly, I don't think it's worth updating.

  zanshin: From <kutztown46> forum:

<kutztown46: If you want to be extra neat, you could edit all the forum descriptions so 8. O-O-O does not show since it was already played.>

This is the convention we followed in the last game. Since <8.0-0-0> has already been played, all forums should start with <8... (Black move list)>

<You do not have to create new marker posts. >

In fact, you really shouldn't make new MARKER posts so that the entire thread of analysis is retained.

crawfb5: Mr. Sticky -- you could probably drop the link to my forum for ICCF opening stats. We are at the point where there are only a handful of games left for our choices. I think 9...b5 has 5 games and 9...Be7 has 9 games in my database.

Oct-06-08  Waitaka: <dotsamoht> Allow me to try to help you with Shredder.

I cant help with menu options and buttons, because I use Shredder engine with Arena GUI.

I usually set Shredder to show 10 lines. (multi PV).

And I set it to infinity analysis and let it runs during a feasible amount of time.

I believe you can set the depth you want (how many plys), but I think it is not an useful option, since some positions are more complex to analyse. For instance, one specific position can take minutes to reach 30 ply, and other, more complex, can take months to reach the same 30 ply!

So, the ply level you can reach depends on your hardware, and your avaiable time to process the position.

The time grows in geometric progression for each ply. So, when It takes about 4 hours (for instance) to reach a specific ply, I know I will not afford to wait to the next ply. So my anaysis ends there.

The good thing is that you can get the results without having to stop the current analysis, so you can publish something like: "At 24 ply, Shredder says (...). I will let it run overnight to see how many plys it goes". Or something like that.

Of course, this is all about infinity analysis, sliding forward and backward is another stuff.

But I hope this helps for now.

Oct-07-08  Waitaka: <dotsamoht> I answered you on my forum.

Hope you are enjoying Shredder. I Choosed Shredder because there are lots of people on the world team using Rybka, and Shredder was known to handle endgames better than any other engine.

But that was before Rybka 3, I don't know how do they compare now.

Yeah that's what I did. I removed the old items, kept the new ones, trimmed the non Bb3 moves (well actually I just renamed them and sunk them to the bottom because I didn't want to delete them if you have some effecient method), but the other moves forum <Does> in fact usually need a marker, which I have taken care of. Otherwise we'll be seeing analysis from an old forum assignment.

And for the next part:

<<I worry, as I think you do, that if, say, <Red October> hosts a temporary forum one month but not the next, valuable information in his forum needed on the next move might be overlooked.>

<Kutztown> said that he will keep "mainlines" within one forum. So, if Red October hosted a mainline, then whenever a new move is made she will continue to host the "main move" forum. That way, a larger percentage of analysis could be preserved linearly. At least, that is my interpretation of how it works.

the real analysis is at the data-tree. People who just want to put in one minute of effort and then vote, don't deserve the efforts for you to have to accomodate them by resorting data from recycled forum nodes.

The data-tree lacks this problem. We don't recycle branches, nor do we disallow starting a new branch in between cycles.

These issues should be kept in mind while doing the sticky, since its a tough job. I spent an extra 10 minutes because I thought "update entry" would update all the entries (I made all the updates, but didn't know I had to click every single click-box).

So I hope you can scroll to the bottom of the sticky and tell me what I should have done with the non-Bb3 moves. Should I have just deleted them or do you have some method to the sticky madness?

sentriclecub: Sorry about the sticky confusion. I was worried when my 50% complete work got mass-deleted.

I started at 2:30 but I'm very slow still. I'm trying to get faster in case you ever need a break when we are running two games.

sentriclecub: As a side question, how do you edit the sticky so fast? Is there a way to get around the "update sticky" every time you want to update a single item?

Is there a way to "update all of the sticky" with just one click?

Dec-16-08
Premium Chessgames Member
  dotsamoht: Sorry for confusion.

In short, the process is as follows:

1. Copy temporary forum assignments from the main forum to each individual forum.

2. Search Kibitzing for the word "marker".

3. For each sticky entry, copy the link from "Search Kibitzing" into the link box, change the kibitzing name as needed, copy the analysis line into the header box and click update entry.

I will send you the exact details given to me by <zanshin> if you give me your e-mail address. If you send me your address to this forum, I will delete it after noting it down so that you do not get spammed.

sentriclecub: <dotsamoht: I volunteered to be Sticky Updater for the Umansky game, but I told <kutztown> you were probably interested, too.

If you want to do that game, let me know.

Or we can tag team both games, helping each other out as needed.

Let me know...>

Ahhh, sadly I have to exclude myself.

Remember this kutztown46 chessforum? My favorite part of editing the sticky is that I can do it anonymously. I've edited it a couple times before and you thought Zanshin did it for you. I like contributing anonymously (as I do on the data-tree under pseudonyms). Sorry if I'm too eccentric. If I helped the team any other way, I'd lose motivation and burn out.

I don't want to be the next <User:Deep Breath> or <User:Once>

Maybe we can figure out something through email. I'll try and figure out a way to help you reliably.
