Jun-02-10 Z Nilsson vs Book, 1946
| |
dukesterdog2: Finally got one right this week! It took me a couple minutes, but I eventually noticed white suffers from back rank weakness that prevents his rook from leaving the first rank. After seeing that, Qd6 forking the rook and knight became obvious.

| |
dukesterdog2: I spent a minute trying to find a way to cut off the flight square at g7 before playing Ng4+. Once I looked at Ng4+ as the first move, quickly found the forced mate. As my first attempt to post an FEN game position, the following is a position from one of my recent online games

| | May-12-09 Reggio vs Chigorin, 1901
| |
dukesterdog2: With the knight in the middle of the action, it was tempting to look for a knight fork, but the d2 and g3 squares were too well protected. Took me a few minutes to find Rxf4 and realize that either capture by black loses.

| |
dukesterdog2: As did others, I only found the first two moves.

| | Apr-23-09 Schlechter vs Gunsberg, 1901
| |
dukesterdog2: I worked it out as played through 38.Rd5; after that I thought play would continue 38...Rxd5 39.Bxd5+ Qxd5 40.Qxe8 leaving white with the advantage of rook for a knight.

| | Apr-01-09 NN vs G Abrahams, 1929
| |
dukesterdog2: Appropriate trickery for the April Fool's Day puzzle. Took me a minute or two to see that black could castle with check. Then I realized, "oh yeah, it's April 1."

| | Mar-25-09 V Malakhatko vs G Timoshenko, 2003
| |
dukesterdog2: I worked it out through 25...Ng4 with the threat of 26...Bh2# and things looked very bleak for black. Only partial credit though, as I didn't notice that Black could temporarily stave off the checkmate by sacrificing bishop and queen.

| | Mar-24-09 NN vs C Shearer, 1978
| |
dukesterdog2: Looks like this is miniatures week for the chessgames tactical puzzle. So far I'm 2/2 this week, which is better than I was last Tuesday.

| | Feb-27-09 Lipschutz vs Gossip, 1889
| |
dukesterdog2: Whether to gossip or keep your lips shut(Lipschutz)...that is the question
| | Jan-30-09 Taimanov vs L Shamkovich, 1955
| |
dukesterdog2: Seeing that the black rook must stay on the back rank, I got white's first three moves. The pawn moves to a5 first so it can get to a6 to support the bishop which will block the rook from supporting black's advanced pawn.
