 | | Patriot: Hi <morf>. I'm doing well. We're starting another G/75 tourney tomorrow (one game per night, for 5 rounds). I'm playing faster now it seems and having to sort of re-think my game. But I think it will put me on the right track and on the road to recovery. I haven't watched any of the Anand games. I have mostly looked at some of my own games, trying to understand where I went wrong. Take care! |
 |
| May-15-12 | | LoveThatJoker: <morf> I'm glad that you enjoyed the games! Polugaevsky vs Tal, 1969 is truly a cool game - this week I will look at Kasparov's analysis of it from MGP 3. Re: Anand-Gelfand, I have been following the match closely and I think it's been a good match thus far, man. It's kinda good for the game when players do not have bad blood between them and all the focus of the match is on the games played. Something tells me that the last match like this was probably the Kramnik-Leko 2004 match. Game 3 has definitely been the most entertaining game yet played for sure! I hope we see some more games of that ilk in this match. LTJ |

 | | sevenseaman: Just passing by and saw AJ's 3 endgame problems.
His endgame against Laning is a plain 4-mate.
Top one, White to play is quite interesting in the game play sense. Lest it spoils <morf>'s fun I am not writing any solutions but the middle one, Black to play is surprisingly good. |

 | | Patriot: Good evening <morf>! Yes I agree about analyzing on my opponent's time. But even if I anticipate their move, it's still a good idea to analyze the position in front of me. <I meant to ask you (1) "Are there increments?" I don't think I've ever played with increments> Yes, I only play on a 5 sec increment or delay since that will help me the most in a USCF-rated game. <(2) Are you making an effort to condense your openings with a view to saving time?> I'm not sure what you mean by condense. If you mean do I play the opening quickly, the answer is yes as long as it is still in 'book' or I already know the right response. Otherwise if it looks odd, I slow down just a bit to see if it is a mistake. |

| May-19-12 | | MarkFinan: Well given this Is CC Morph, with no time limit to make moves, no matter how hard and long Iv'e now started looking at this game, I'm certainly not gonna win, and I can't protect them a and c pawns from your Rook even If the Queens were to be exchanged, so I will do what I really should have done a while ago and tip over my King..... *Resigns* 0-1.. Well done mate, I'll go over a PM shortly...
Next time I'm showing more respect by paying more attention and taking more time, but It appears the better guy won here :).... Well played |

 | | Patriot: Hi <morf>! Good job on your win! I see what you mean about the opening--good advice!
By the way, I won the first round in the tournament which lasted 2.5 hours. This is ongoing for 5 rounds, 1 round per night. For some strange reason in the game, I knew I could win a pawn but for some reason interpreted white as getting counterplay and decided to play something "safe". Here's where white played 6.b3?: click for larger viewSo I played 6...cxd4 7.cxd4 Bb4+ 8.Bd2:
 click for larger viewHere I calculated 8...Nxd4 9.Nxd4 Qxd4 10.Bb5+ Bd7 11.Bxd7+ Kxd7 and thought white was getting some sort of counterplay on 10.Bb5+. Dan thought that was strange and I agreed. Instead I played 8...Bd7? and only won much later when my opponent dropped a pawn. It's interesting the kinds of decisions we sometimes make during a game. That's where I think we can make big improvements by going over our own games. By questioning these short-term decisions we make ourselves aware of the flaws in our logic. |

 | | sevenseaman: <morf> My greatest joy this whole year, the impossible has happened; Chelsea have won the CL from Bayern in their own backyard. I feel truly regaled by my most favored footie club in the world. Whats more, my best footballer ever Drogba was in the limelight. (I hope you have a corner for British footie) |

 | | Patriot: Good afternoon, <morf>! <Great that you won anyways, thats what really matters. There's nothing wrong with keeping the win in hand [following a more conservative line.]> The problem is, I threw away a big advantage. If I had been winning anyway, then following a conservative line could be the best way to go. One of my goals is to not miss golden opportunities. <I don't think this constitutes a real 'flaw in logic'. After all you won. Could be just a minor confidence issue (since you see whats best.) You see it, go for it!> You may have hit the nail on the head. Dan has mentioned that in Rowson's "The Seven Deadly Chess Sins", when someone plays too slow and gets into time trouble, one cause may be lack of self-confidence. That could be what happened in this case. I'm glad you mentioned this! Well you certainly showed no signs of a lack of self-confidence. In your game, 16...Rxc3! was a really nice exchange sac! That was very gutsy. |
 |
| May-20-12 | | MarkFinan: <Patriot> It was gutsy! I really arne't gonna try make excuses here because I think <Morf> played a lot better than me, but I remember thinking at the time..'You're gonna have to prove that sac to me', and I guess he did???
However I really wish I'd taken that game more seriously, not because I underestimated Morf, but because I didn't really spend much time looking and by the time I did.... It was too late!! I would never resign In this position with a clock ticking away, but I'm sure you can see there was no point prolonging the Inevitable as it would have been disrespectful to even hope for a draw In that position... There was no perp on, and that was the best I could have hoped for... You don't really get away with the mistakes I did in CC, I guess.. |

 | | Patriot: <morf>, We only played the first round, which is enough on a work night at 7pm @2.5 hours. Here's another game (from another tourney) where I missed a golden opportunity: click for larger viewI played 15.Rxc5, which isn't as good as 15.dxc5. Dan said he would not be happy if he missed that in a speed game. The reason is that 15.dxc5 is much more forcing, leaving him with only one move. The queen, however, has the diagonal of squares or b4. So after the better, 15.dxc5 you get 15...Nd7 16.Nd4 and he has real problems! click for larger viewThe actual game went, 15.Rxc5 Qe8 16.Bd6 Rf7:
 click for larger viewI calculated 17.Ne5 Nbd7 18.Nxf7 Nxc5 19.Nh6+ gxh6 20.Bxc5 (which is what happened). I also wondered if 17.Ng5 might be better, but after 17...Rd7 I just didn't see it. The answer is 18.Bc7!, forcing the win of the exchange. click for larger viewDan said that is a LOT harder to see than 15.dxc5 above. After all, this was G/30 so I can't see everything. The game went on and resulted in a draw against this ~1800 player. |

 | | Patriot: <MarkFinan> I thought you played pretty well. We all make mistakes though. Sometimes I don't realize just how many until I show my games to my coach! But you only lose if you don't learn anything from your mistakes. |

 | | sevenseaman: <morf> <I didn't know you were a football fan> You have used the right term, 'a fan'. You could truly say about me that I am a jack of all trades. But admittedly I've never played football - no talent. Whenever I tried to kick it, my leg flew to the opponents face and the ball coolly went under and behind. (An onlooker would think that was my intent, not knowing how much the gaucherie embarrassed me) But 1986 FIFA WC (Maradona) and the English Premier League acted as magnets. Now I am heavily into La liga, Bundesliga and Serie A also. Chelsea is my Numero Uno and Didier Drogba my best player. (Sadly they finished 6th in the BPL, this season). Funny how a person falls in love with a thing he himself is no good at! |

 | | sevenseaman: All quiet on the Western Front. Remember long time back we used to do a training format 'how to think'. Its the elementary thing with all problems. If you can outline the contours of your plan/wish in advance you will find it easier to fit your objective into the template. After a long wait I decided to bring one such sample to rekindle the cerebral fires that seem to have gone cold. Here;
 click for larger viewWhite t.p. & w.
Its not for solving, its for a demo.(no one is stopping anyone from trying, so give it 5 minutes before reading the analysis. If you do not succeed easily the value of analysis will be doubled). Analysis
White has a mate if he could check with his R from h8. That needs the B to be at f6. The B can only go via e7 and needs to do that before the Black g P gets to g5. In other words White is a <tempo> short. So if the R can get to h7 with <tempo>, g P will remain stationary & this plan will succeed. Therefore;
1. Rg7+ Kh8 2. Rh7+ Kg8 3. Be7 Rxe7 (forced as else B gets to f6 )4. Rxe7 1-0 W/o the tempo we have 1.Rg7+ Kh8 2.Be7? Rg8! and no mate. (You will notice that with tempo the Black K is forced to occupy g8 and R cannot go there). Hope you bear with me this one time on our 'how to think' format, just a refresher. |

| May-21-12 | | MarkFinan: Hi Morf.. I'll post this in stages as I can't post diagrams from my phone, and don't have a computer to use right now..
Well my first main mistake was 8.Nf5? If you'd played 8...Nxe4, I would have had to drop the pawn, or this would have happened 9.Nxg7+ (trying to regain the pawn!) ...Bxg7 10.Nxe4 ..Qe6 11.Qe2 ...Nd4 12.Qd3 ...f5! All pretty much forced, and I have to lose the knight! So I think we can put 8.Nf5 as a No-No lol...
I didn't notice this till I started going through the game today, It wasn't like I'd noticed a few moves later what could have happened, but anyway as early as move 8 my problems started! I'll point out my other mistakes between moves 8- 18 after you've commented on this post.. Did you see this after the game? |
 |
| May-22-12 | | MarkFinan: Hi Morf... I haven't forgot you or our PM mate, Iv'e been through the game and written down notes, iv'e just been busy! I'll be nipping In and out tonight, so If I get time we'll have a good look at the game, as Iv'e got quite a bit to say.. If not It'll be tommorow some time, but I won't let you down buddy, I promise.... Plus.... You have to give me a chance to equalise? ;) |

 | | Patriot: Hi <morf>. Actually I didn't win the exchange. It was one of those lines I didn't see but wish I did! It's where I cut the analysis short (which must be done sometimes in G/30), because it didn't seem to lead anywhere. But I missed the next forcing move, a threat that wins the exchange. |
 |
May-22-12
 | | Patriot: <LMAJ> Thanks! Those are some very good questions you raise! #4 is especially interesting. <morf> may have correctly assessed my problem (#3) in one of the diagrams I showed him. I think 'lack of confidence' prevented me from winning a pawn. If you have already posted those types of questions on your website, I'd like to review them! That may help pinpoint some of my problems. |
