i am a young scholar (humanities) in eastern europe. i love chess as a hobby, but i prefer to watch others play rather than do it myself. it is unbelievable but i last played at least a bit seriously in 1993. people used to say that due to reading chess history books i was one of the three erudites of chess history in my country. unfortunately, my knowledge exceeds my skills by far. i was known to possess excellent reaction and playing blitz i set myself 2 minutes and offered my rivals to set ten for themselves, and achieved far better results than under regular conditions (try it, it is a disastrous psychological weapon!). my favourite player is viktor kortchnoi. i also adore the style and personality of dr. botvinnik and efim bogoljubov. my favourite personality is jonathan speelman who encouraged me to study hard when i was 14 and was talking to him on the staircase at moscow gma 1990. I occasionally solve tactics at chesstempo under the same username. my highest ever ranking is 2067,7, so i guess my playing skills could be approximately 1950.

outsider: Karpov-Korchnoi 1974 had the fixed number of games; their 1978 match was FAR longer. Maybe let us first remember Kasparov-Karpov 1984?! 48 games and still no finish must be something

Oct-18-09 Reti vs Capablanca, 1924 (replies)

outsider: do you also get the impression that on the blank, reti subconsciously started writing "alekhine", and the crossed out letters are "Al" http://ca.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fitxer...

   Oct-18-09 Bronstein vs Stein, 1965

outsider: 49...e4 is good!

   Oct-17-09 Tal vs Polugaevsky, 1974

outsider: yeah, white inevitably lose one more pawn, and black get two passers on different flanks. that's a win

   Oct-17-09 Taubenhaus vs A A Smorodsky, 1914 (replies)

outsider: would 12... b4 have helped?

   Oct-17-09 P Romanovsky vs A A Smorodsky, 1924

outsider: romanovsky came second in this tournament (iirc), he was the strongest player in the soviet union at that time (bogoljubov anyway was only a "guest"), and smorodsky came last. in terms of the contemporary elo, there would have been some 200 points difference between them

   Oct-15-09 I Krush vs C Baginskaite, 2009

outsider: the black were just horrible
