I learned to play chess from my dad (who didn't??). I never played in a chess club (except the university's for a while) but I've been studying chess on my own since 2000-2001.

radu stancu: Agreed! :D They do have only one player above 1900 (2227 rating) so I'll just watch such a match from afar. In other news I have a game in which I've had K+P vs K in a won position but my opponent won't resign... I've just set up conditional moves (some lines even up to mate), ...

radu stancu: Only one game I can find in this line: http://www.365chess.com/game.php?gi... They diverged at move 10 but can still get back into it with 11.Be3 O-O. Not that there's much to get back to, since it was a 17 move draw.

radu stancu: For someone who was seen as a huge underdog, Gelfand is doing impressively well. I hope that no matter the result of the match he'll show this kind of form in future tournaments too.

Oct-24-09  NakoSonorense: Good game! Thanks for playing and the invite to your tournament.

I hated your 12.e5. After that, I didn't think I was going to last much longer. I didn't want to take my knight back to g8, but I had no other option. However, I was very relieved when you played 16.exd6. That let me bring my knight out and then place it on d5, which was pretty good for me, I think.

Anyway, I've got to admit that I did a lot better in this tournament than I expected. I finished with 10.5/16, but I was given away 2 points when <madbishop> forfeited on time on the very first move.

Thanks everyone for playing and I hope to face you again later on. Just not you, <Open Defence> You're too good for me! =(

radu stancu: Good point about exd6. So I guess this time the problem was not the bishop, it was the pawn that went to the wrong file. Letting it on e5 would have made black's life much harder.

Open Defence: <Just not you, <Open Defence> You're too good for me! =(> I thought our game was the most interesting (the closed one)

anyway it looks like I am headed for my first loss at gameknot :(

unless I can weasel out of it like I did against Jammic

  radu stancu: <radus> - <keypusher> 1/2

It was a 78 moves battle in an <Alekhine's Defense, Modern (B05)>. I won a pawn and had an interesting attack but then I squandered my chances and then keypusher managed to even win my bishop, so I had to defend a rook+pawn vs rook+knight+pawn endgame, which thankfully I did. :) I look forward to analyzing the game.

  radu stancu: <weaponofchoice> - <radus> 1-0

An interesting King's Indian in which my all-in king-side attack was stopped by a white queen incursion. I wonder what would have happened had I not allowed the white queen to breach my defenses.

Open Defence: <radu> you had me on the ropes there, my Q side push was too slow (how many times we 1.d4 players get sucked into that KID trap!) but then I think somewhere you made a slip and I had a valuable tempo to secure my second rank (defending g2) from when on my q side push became lethal..

well played!

radu stancu: <Open Defence> Thanks, well played from your part too. :) I will definitely try this line again. I'm having a lot of fun with the King's Indian lately, although I'm having my share of losses with it.

And with that the tournament is completed. Thank you all for participating, and congratulations to <Open Defence> for a flawless victory. :)

Open Defence: thanks, to have 100% wins in such a strong field is incredible, I think my 2 Knights game against Keypusher as Black was my best...

Tried to get you more games, but I think you have it set to 2. And I can't get/give you any more.

Good game we're having in Gameknot but I think you let me off the hook back in the position where we still have our Queens.

That's a good point.

Let's say I consider it extremely improbable, but certainty is impossible given the present state of my information.
