~~~~~~~~~~~
I learned to play chess from my dad (who didn't??). I never played in a chess club (except the university's for a while) but I've been studying chess on my own since 2000-2001.
~~~~~~~~~~~

<Openings with white>

- d4 almost exclusively as I want to enlarge my white repertoire. Used to play 1.e4, and 1.Nf3 before that.

<Openings with black>

- against e4: Gave up the Sicilian in correspondence chess as the theory runs too deep. Played 1...e5 for a while, now I'm giving the French a chance.

- against d4: King's Indian Defense. Things get quite complicated but black definitely has good chances with it. Used to play mostly d5, going for the Albin Countergambit.

<Internet chess accounts>

<radus> on GameKnot (correspondence chess). Rating around 1800.

radu stancu: Thanks for the live games, <chessgames>! Given the popular interest in Carlsen I guess it's fitting that this tournament ends with one of his wins. :)

radu stancu: Eyal: Thanks for checking that. I guess Carlsen is correct to take his time then. He has probably seen where 50.Rxc2 leads, and now is calculating the 50.Kg5 lines.

radu stancu: Good point about exd6. So I guess this time the problem was not the bishop, it was the pawn that went to the wrong file. Letting it on e5 would have made black's life much harder.

radu stancu: That's why in some rapid games the rules say that the arbiter will have to decide whether the side who "won" on time was actually trying to win at the end, otherwise the game can be pronounced a draw. Of course, you still have to keep from blundering before the time expires.

  radu stancu: <radus> - <orangutan (Zebra)> 0-1

My queen stuck her nose where she shouldn't have and never managed to get it out again. :)

Apr-16-09   Zebra: Nice to finish with a win against such a strong player - but to tell the truth I have felt heavily outgunned throughout this tournament. I enjoyed it though - thanks to all participants.

  arsen387: another loss by me, this time against Radu, <chuchuka>-<radus> 0-1, don't know what I was thinking during my last 2 moves, maybe just wanted to avoid a draw at any cost. seems like I succeeded :) well done, <radu>

  radu stancu: <nakosonorense> - <radus> 1/2

Nako lost the exchange early on but I wasn't able to capitalize on that. I exchanged too many pieces, resulting in a position where his knight had much more power than I would have expected.

May-22-09   NakoSonorense: Good game, <radu>!

Actually, I wasn't planning on exchanging my rook for your knight - it was a "mouse slip." I wanted to place it on c1 instead. :(

After that, I was behind the whole game. At the end, all of your 4 pawns were isolated and I think that helped me make up for the piece imbalance. I tried some cheap shots in the last few moves, but you obviously didn't fall for any! :)

Looking forward to a second game. Good luck!

  radu stancu: I thought it might have been a mouse slip, but didn't really know what to do about it. I mean, I hate it when it happens to me, but I take the view that this kind of interface problems even out over a large number of games, so I played as if you put the piece there on purpose.

I was looking for some cheap shots of my own in the end, as I was one move from mating you. Mainly trying to see if I can let you put me in check with your knight so that I could capture it with my rook without you being able to recapture with the queen because of the mate. It didn't work either as you had much better checks to give that would have led to a won game for you. :)

Anyway, lets see what this next game brings. Good luck to you too.

  arsen387: I just finished my last game in our tournament, <weaponofchoice>-<chuchuka> 1-0. Despite having a terrible final result several very interesting games throughout made it worth to participate in. thanks to all for the games and hope to play with you in the future again.

  Open Defence: thanks Arsen, the middle game was interesting and the right continuation would have given black an active game (always dangerous in the KID) but I was lucky that a mistake let me win a lot of material

  radu stancu: I have quite a few games in progress right now so you might see me getting down to less than a day again in the future, but I'm not keen on doubling my time-out total so don't worry about our game. :) Thanks for the warning anyway.

  Open Defence: well at the time of the draw offer it looked very even but I thought I could create some tactical problems, still Black had to play very perfectly, for example at move 41 if 41...Rb2 instead of 41...Rd2 Black might get an extra pawn which is of no use to her winning chances in the end game.. so very well played except for some minor lapses, but in the end game it makes all the difference

  radu stancu: <radus> - <nakosonorense> 1/2

A <B51: Sicilian, Canal-Sokolsky (Rossolimo) Attack> in which neither side managed to create a big threat. I think I'm placing my dark squares bishop on bad positions in this opening and even if I have a space advantage I'm playing with one less piece than black...

Oct-24-09   NakoSonorense: Good game! Thanks for playing and the invite to your tournament.

I hated your 12.e5. After that, I didn't think I was going to last much longer. I didn't want to take my knight back to g8, but I had no other option. However, I was very relieved when you played 16.exd6. That let me bring my knight out and then place it on d5, which was pretty good for me, I think.

Anyway, I've got to admit that I did a lot better in this tournament than I expected. I finished with 10.5/16, but I was given away 2 points when <madbishop> forfeited on time on the very first move.

Thanks everyone for playing and I hope to face you again later on. Just not you, <Open Defence> You're too good for me! =(
