I live in Wellington, New Zealand. I don't enjoy competition chess but I read a lot about chess and chess history. I hold degrees in mathematics and physics, including a Ph.D in statistics. I have a passing interest in the statistics of ratings and comparisons of top players over time. It seems to me to be impossible to compare players over time and that ELO ratings are not suited to that job. I love playing through the games of Fischer, Kasparov, Capablanca, Korchnoi and Botvinnik.

sigmastatistics: Hi again Jonathan. Coincidentally, I read Dawkins' book (The God Delusion) while on vacation with my 11-year-old son in Darwin, Australia. By the way - my son has no interest in chess, but has demonstrated talent in mathematics, in which he has won gold medals and very high
