   Nov-08-18 Curacao Candidates (1962) (replies)

swampdragon: When Fischer was undistracted and wasn't pouting about some real or imagined injustice, he was one of the greatest players who ever lived. Unfortunately, due to a combination of immaturity and mental illness, we did not get to see that Fischer enough times to really know what he

Oct-31-18 Carlsen - Caruana World Championship Match (2018) (replies)

swampdragon: I miss the larger round robin tournaments at least as much as the longer World Championship matches. It's all about the economics, and frankly as chess fans we're lucky that we have twelve game matches instead of best of three.

   Aug-29-18 Biographer Bistro (replies)

swampdragon: Only editors can see it.

   Aug-13-18 Hans Berliner

swampdragon: I encourage everyone to read Mr. Wall's bio of Berliner at the link he provided. Although his pioneer status in computer chess is probably objectively more impressive, I mostly remember picking up Chess Reviews decades apart and seeing Berliner still sitting on top of the ...

swampdragon: Tibor Karolyi has a three volume series of best games published by Quality Chess. He's a good annotator, but it's nowhere near a complete games collection.

swampdragon: I am an infrequent poster, probably because I'm here strictly for the chess. From my point of view, there are two legitimate uses for this thread. One is to honor the life and legacy of Daniel Freeman. The second is to learn about, wishcast, or even speculate over the future of ...

Jul-31-18 Tal vs Benko, 1958 (replies)

swampdragon: It looks like there's an opening classification mistake here. Why isn't this a Sicilian Dragon rather than B32?

   Jul-20-18 Vera Menchik (replies)

swampdragon: I have more of these than I should. The Alekhine book is marvelous, a true desert island book, and the Blackburne book isn't far behind.

   Jul-09-18 John Nunn (replies)

swampdragon: I suspect he discovered that it is more lucrative to write about chess than to play in tournaments, at least for a writer as talented as John Nunn.

   May-21-18 Teichmann vs Alekhine, 1921

swampdragon: It was not easy for Alekhine to get out of Russia after the Russian Revolution. This was his first serious game after leaving Russia, and I'd guess that's the reason for the quick draw with Black.
