Chess has long been a passion of mine, though I confess to not being a particularly strong over-the-board player. It was widely expected that (as in Mathematics) interest in chess would die out when computers could dominate human players. I think it is particularly telling that this has not happened.

I am a Mathematician by day, a field sharing many skills with chess: the ability to weigh concrete thoughts with strategic and abstract thoughts, for example.

Despite my avatar I am English not American but have a real passion for (American) football. I am a New York Giants fan and have been for much longer than their stretch of new-found success; but I bet everyone says that.

tweet77: <hms123> Sounds like interesting work - you enjoy it? I recently had to give up work (temporarily). I was a post-doc researcher in analysis: spectral theory and PDEs. I still like research, but may move into teaching instead.

tweet77: team black Hi All, Looking forward to a hard-fought match. Don't expect anything exotic - with computers involved it'll be e4 or d4. Good luck!

tweet77: I can't see the harm in posting long lines, even if they are not immediately useful. It is sometimes helpful and interesting to see the game played out in full, or to a simpler endgame. Sometimes moves pop up which may be of interest earlier in these lines.
