virginmind: Kings tournament started a few days ago in Medias, but it's downgraded to a match Romania-Germany, where there are only a few 2600s, the rest are 2500s. Nisipeanu not playing.

  moronovich: Good morning !

Just said goodbye to wify this (another)grey ,silent and wet morning.Bu tit is fine with me.Around 16.30 or so the darkness sets in and then it is candle and championleaques time ! Why not get the bestout of the season !?..

Glad you liked the Jobava interview.he always has something of interest to say.Kind of happy, honest independent soul. The man one would like to share a cup of coffee,or a beer with.I dont agree with all he says, but if that was the criteria I should be locked up in a cave;)

Hope you are fine and will enjoy your weekend.Any plans or/and wishes ?

Take care and see you around !

  virginmind: Hello there!

Dark & foggy here too, and they say it's getting worse. Just the usual november weather, to which I guess you are accustomed to, with all that time spent at sea.

Things are getting well here, and I hope it is the case for you and your wife too. A colleague told me of a chess tournament going on in the city, but I don't think I'll participate.

Please tell me some of the things you dont agree from what Jobava said. Is it about the computers? About the openings? I forgot to ask you, which is your preferred opening (with black and white)? And when did you play your last rated game?

Bye bye!

  moronovich: Hi´!

About Jobava:It was perhaps only the use of a coach I did disagree with. But on a second thought it may be himself he talked about...My response was based only on #1 Jobava interview and it was a pleasure reding about #2,and thanks for reminding ! And I have always, like him, advocated the importance to use ones own brain too. Worst case scenario could perhaps be soon generations to come rely too much on computers. But as I see them now, they are and will remain a doubleedged sword, as till a couple of years ago I had a strong wish they never were invented. But let us get the best out of them and live with them ,is my stand for the moment.

I played the last rated game 1985.But has maintained the strenght since then as far as I can observe. But otherwise it is the usual story with age:Deeper understanding, but sometimes sloppy calculation. And definately less killer instinct. So if odds were even,my money would be on moro 85 vs moro version 15,but I am not shure..

With White I usually went 1.d4,but spiced it with 1.c4 and occasionally 1.Nf3 and just a very few times 1.e4 ;)

With Black it was usually Sicillian, the scheveningen(Dragon earlier).Sometimes Owens and later the sicilan was supplemented with Pirc. Just on few occasions Caro Kann or spanish.

Against other than 1.e4 it was mainly,Kings Indian,Chech and classic Benoni or Dutch.Leningrad beeing the preferred.

So it turned out that I played sharp with Black and patiently a la Karpov,Kramnik with White !?

I always tried to find the best move which can be very good for the understanding and depth, but somehow sometimes unpractical due to time pressure and tension. It took me many, many years to figure out that there simply are postions were some moves are (more or less) equally good.

Well, that was in a little nutshell a big part of my chess story. Thanks for asking and we may return to the subject one sunny day,IF the sun has not forgot to shine on our countries ¤ ;)

And you, what do you play with White or Black ?
And perhaps : why !?

virginmind: 1985, wow, 30 years! Your choices were never mine. The English? I hated it. The Sicilian? Too huge and complicated for me. With white, it has always been, since 1978 1.e4. At 1...e5, always 2.Nf3 and if 2...Nc6, always 3.Bc4, hoping for Two knights defense and not some Italian game.

As black, at 1.d4 I play the Slav, but usually coupled with fianchetto on the king side. At 1.e4 always 1...e5, and then preferring either two knights defense, or the Spanish with 6...Bc5.

It's of course the image of an almost perfect diletant. I've never studied openings (or very rarely and in a hurry) so you can imagine I can be easily squashed right from the beginning of a game. Why? Out of lazyness. I could not be bothered studying and memorizing those long lines, for me this was taking out almost all pleasure and fantasy and feeling of adventure and freedom from the chess game. OK, one would become stronger, win more games, get some deeper understanding of the game...but for this price? Nah, not me :)

Good night!

Sounds like a clever choice to me !
It is the joyful and adventuorous part that is the most important IMHO. Better happy with 1000 than 2600 and playing/feeling like robot. To put it roughly.I have met several 23-2450 players who didn´t seem to be real content about their achievements,.

When I left comppetive play and then returned occasionally to kibitz and chat there were almost the same players talking about the same stuff over and over which confirmed me that my choice was the right one.

Today is surprisingly sunny and mild, hoovering around 13-14,and perhaps I´ll phone JWH and see if it is time for a couple of pints ;)

Take care and hope all the best for your weekend !

virginmind: Ha ha, I hope two and a half years is not too late for a response to you, <moronovich> ;), and of course I agree with the fact that joy should inhabit all who play the chess game, as it should with, after all, any human activity and endeavour. In reality, such is not possible (like, getting joy in one's everyday job) all the time and for everybody, unfortunatelly. And why is that so? Well, because of the relativity of this world and of human mind. We are way too imperfect and complex and whatnot, and there you go - wars and famine and injustice everywhere, even in the 21st century, as if humankind is incapable of learning to...to...well, but how this can be, if, as noted, we're a bunch of imperfect humans?

Sorry for this digression, it's out of a disappearing headache (long live Panadol!), I just wanted to appear a bit more smart than I am, or was it just that I'm getting talkative once my forum is re-opened, or...maybe I'm just being happy that life can be indeed so cool sometimes and feeling the need to share this discovery to someone? OK, enough, for now :)

Anyway, somehow at 54 I tend to get more instances when I feel great as compared to, say, 18 or 19, when, while being in my third or fourth month of (mandatory, under Ceausescu) military service period, I was publishing in the military unit's gazette a poem titled "Waiting For the Worms", a titled derived from one of Pink Floyd's 'The Wall' songs - which, as you can expect, wasn't quite welcomed by the leadership of that socialist military unit, as it was quickly torn out from the wall it was posted on, and me being downgraded from the second group platoon comandant to....regular soldier :) Oh the good old days of incredibly absurd but somehow candid socialist years....

OhioChessFan: It's rather difficult to be really good at something, but not outstanding. I can't imagine what it's like for the players that top out at 2400, who surely won everything they played in as juniors, but then hit a wall as an adult and realized that all the time and effort were essentially for naught. There's always teaching and book writing, but those fields are so hyper-competitive that I doubt many make even a decent living.

virginmind: I think Anand said something like: nowadays if you're not a GM by 14, you can forget about it. Exaggeration apart, it speaks volumes on the reality of today's competitive chess. Especially money-wise.

Fortunatelly talent is visible early enough, so by 15-16, (definitely by 20) you or your trainer should know if it's worth continuing on this path and seriously think about performance and/or make a living out of chess. I mean, hard work is a must, but without a clear sign of great talent, I doubt that chess should be treated else than a hobby.

moronovich: Good evening my dear <virginmind>!

Nice feeling to be a guest in your new house...)

Have just arrived from town where I saw KJ for the first time in a month, due to this irregular stomach. So good to see him again and off course a lot of football talk.We are all alert about the Danish team and in 9 days we shall play our first game vs Peru !

It is still hot outside but soon the temperatures will lower and it gonna be quite pleasant, with the door and windpos open.Hannah is comming back from a seminiar in Copenhagen and soon I´ll take my first look on todays games. Have no clue, for the moment.

And thanks for sharing your story from your time in the army!!I´have always had the deepest respect for those who stood up against tyranny and injustice.

Hats off.And I suppose it must have been tough afterwards and during the process !?…

I also have trust in Anands evaluation about the chances for becomming an elite player. There is something about learning and the development and the opposite of the brain.OTH I started out late,20 years, and got an IM norm so... but these were different times. And from there to a full professional is a big gap.

Nice talking with you,but now I am off to chess and cooking!

See you around and all the best.

OhioChessFan: I sort of agree with Vishy, although it's just a little too convenient to think that isn't influenced a bit by the thought that a genius level kid will know if he's got it or not just at the time he'll have to decide to pursue higher education. But there really aren't any late bloomers to be found. Perhaps that's a self fulfilling prophecy.

virginmind: Hi and welcome, <moronovich>, that poem wasn't intended as a critic for the military unit or socialism, it's just that the mood that derived from it wasn't appreciated by the leaders of that unit. Of course that I didn't and don't see myself as someone who opposed the regime and was punished for that, and I really wasn't. At the time I took it more humouristicaly. There was no other bad follow up for me, and I couldn't care less for that minimal position anyway (haha, the rank - group 2 comandant - was formally given right at the beginning for the hight: I was the third highest soldier in that platoon :) Just a funny memory from the army...

Sorry to hear about your irregular stomach, looks like it's something that won't go away with just pills - I suppose you've tried that?

Altibox finished and Caruana has given another warning sign in the direction of Carlsen, even though he lost against him in the first round.

Weekend's approaching and the weather's still fine, also the mood.

Ciao.

  moronovich: Good evening <virginmind> !

Yeah,weekends aproaching----again ;)
Hope you will enjoy yours.Any plans ?

It is restricting my life this irregular stomach, but I haven´t heard of any pills that could help….

Otherwise things are so fine and quite as they can be and besides from a severe lack of water(rain),the "neverending" summer here, has its own charm.Like our house has becomming larger and the boarders between inside and ouside dont exist that much.People around the neighbourhood also become more openminded and the sound of young kids playing outside is kind of classic music to my ear.

5 months to the big match and the recent development in the chess circuit could by no mean had hurt Fabianos selfconfidence…..hence we may be in for a real epic clash!?

Still a peculiar coincidence that my old Maria is our new neighbour!?But that is fine too and one day we shall talk about old days.

Take care and see you around.

Should also send you greetings from Hannah !

What a player. What a comeback in the second set and the perfect demolition of Stephens in the third.

So kudos to you and all your compatriots and to Halep herself off course.

I can imagime it must have been a nailbiting experience in front of the television !?

We were shopping and were just in time to the third.

Au revoir to you and to Paris :)

virginmind: Hi! Yes it sure has been nail biting, but finaly she's won her first grand slem with Rolland Garros! And thank you for your kind remarks. Indeed she's proven again that she's a great talent and a real fighter.

You are right, it's peculiar to have your former friend, Maria, as your neighbour now. I guess you two will adapt to the situation and get together just fine.

I don't know, I thought that, as with any other illness, pills might at least help, if not cure an irregular stomach. What about the doctors, what do they say?

I won again this evening against a Dane, this time at 2 min. blitz, the guy was (again) rated some 300 points more than me - and it was a first at this time of play(there were still one or two seconds increment, I don't remember).

Still warm here and almost no rain at all, summer could get draughty.

Greetings to Hannah also from Maria (she's left for Onesti since this morning, returning tomorrow).

And a fine weekend for you, still under way :)

moronovich: Yes,it looks great and tomorrow I´ll enjoy as today was an(other) wonderful time with JWH.Still amazing how much we can exchange and then on so may levels and subjects! So today I missed it,but tomorrow….

<What about the doctors, what do they say?>Well,I´ll go se them if it continues, but most likely the answer is that I must live an deal with it. Heuresement my basic spirits are very fine.

Sounds like it goes fine with your chess online !? (Just beat them danes!)

We may have some rain(if the forecast is rigth)in some days and we are many looking forward to it.And at the same time I also hope that you will get some too!

Also greetings to you and Maria from Hannah and yours truly here from little Denmmark while we are awating our first match against Peru on saturday!(More nanilbiting;)

På gensyn.

virginmind: Oh, JWH, right. I wonder how he looks like. Is he of your age? For how long have you been friends? What about your other buddy, forgot his name (or rather, initials), how did you get to meet and befriend him?

So Peru's gonna be your first footballish encounter on Saturday...can't say I know much about that team, other than, being a Southamerican one, it should be tough to deal with. But good luck and I will root for your countrymen! I envy you for that Saturday evening sitting in front of the TV among friends, with pizza&beer cheering for your Danish team...

Sunny and warm here, with some storms due to arrive the next days, but apparently less so in the eastern part of the country - where yours truly reside.

Little following of Leuven, as I'm not quite fond of this steady mix of comments, keep interchanging live. Maybe in blitz it's gonna be better. Or worse? :)

I will see you around.

  moronovich: Good evening <virginmind> !

Thanks for your congratulations. And we may need all the suppport we can get if our team doesn´t improve ;) That really was a big steal against the poor peruvians who deserved better. But hey, that is football and all we need now is beating Australia on Tuesday...

Sorry to hear about Marias cousin. So would you please send her my condolences.

We also lost Hannahs best friend last wednesday,so it is a tough period for Hannah, but she manages very well so far.But there is an empty chair which never will be used again………….

Otherwise things are going well here and I am enjoying lower temperatures and the course of the World Cup.

Quite interesting to see the big favourites fail---so far ! But it makes next round the more tense with high stakes every were.

Hope you have returned safely through the rain and enjoy your life.

Take care my friend and see you around.

Au revoir !

sorry forgot about your questions:
Met KJ 42 years ago and we have done so many things together,as living together for 6 years, travelling a lot, jogging in the forest, going with the kayak and much more.Seen each other kid grow up.

JWH and I met at a cafe were I took comfort after my son got this braindamage. We clicked at once and have during these 12 years developed a very fine relation were we can talk about litterally everything.Which makes me feel blessed.

virginmind: Hi <moronovich>, sorry to hear about Hannah losing her best friend...the close ones leave deep holes in our soul difficult to compensate, indeed, when they're not anymore around.

I did watch some football games here and there, partly, and the surprises, as you know, continued, the last one being Poland losing to Nigeria. And also Colombia to Japan. So Russia the first to qualify to the next step. Good luck tomorrow against Australia!

Thank you for the details regarding your two friends, looks like two enduring friendships indeed that offer great joy and comfort. Quite understandable the need to keep them close, it's rare to have such folks whom you feel so attached to.

Let's not forget about Paris rapid&blitz, it just started today. Enjoy.
