I learned the game in the aftermath of Fischer/Spassky while in high school, back in 1972. Helped to start a chess club in school. After graduation, I joined the Navy, and left the game behind. The old flame came calling, and in the last two years, have returned to the game. I was playing 1400 chess at the time I joined the Navy, and now any 7 year old who learns the game can probably beat me.

My favorite players include Morphy as well as Andersen, Alekhine as well as Capablanca, Petrosian as well as Spassky, Fischer, and Kasparov.

weisyschwarz: <offramp>, would you consider Svidler a top GM? Or did he just have a bad day?
   Jan-23-18 A Giri vs Karjakin, 2018 (replies)
weisyschwarz: This second-hand crystal ball tells me that we will have a QGD Slav in this game, with Karjakin winning in about 50 moves.
   Jan-18-18 A Giri vs Anand, 2018 (replies)
weisyschwarz: Little piece of paper in my fortune cookie says "English Symmetrical, draw in 35 moves."
   Jan-16-18 Caruana vs W So, 2018 (replies)
weisyschwarz: The bullet So dodged struck Hou.
   Jan-15-18 A Giri vs Carlsen, 2018 (replies)
weisyschwarz: Tea leaf formation suggests something "deja-vu". So, as per Tata 2016, how about a QGD, Ragozin, with a draw in 40?
   Jan-14-18 Svidler vs A Giri, 2018 (replies)
weisyschwarz: First? Really? Okay. Pigeon entrails seem to indicate a Semi-Slav, with a draw in 45 moves.
   Jan-09-18 Leonhardt vs F Englund, 1908 (replies)
weisyschwarz: Englund swings like a pendulum do.
Dec-31-17 AlphaZero vs Stockfish, 2017 (replies)
weisyschwarz: <Eatman>, what about <Whiteshark's> line, 34...bxc4, where 35. Rd3 is not possible?
   Feb-23-17 Kosteniuk vs A Muzychuk, 2017 (replies)
weisyschwarz: She had Muzychuk on the run from the beginning. 56. Ne5 was a shock as well.
