Good question, I'm not entirely sure.
The standard error for each player will go as 1/sqrt(n) where n is the number of positions anaylzed. I just did some simulations, which suggest that the uncertainty in the gradient of a linear fit is independent of how the positions are apportioned among the players, so long as the total number of positions is the same. |

 |
| whatthefat: Although, if I reduce it to 2-3 players, the error is reduced. Hmmm... My gut instinct is that it's better to have fewer but more reliable points, but I'm not sure. |

| nimh: My logic went along this line: if you wanted to build a big dome, would you support it with three pillars of strength X or 12 pillars of strength 0.25X? <the gradient of a linear fit is independent> What about other types of fits, especially logarithmic? Since you stated it makes no difference, I think it wouldn't do any harm to experiment with a larger number of data points. |

Higher order or nonlinear fits I'm not sure of. But it seems that as long as you have more than say 3 points, it makes little difference for a linear fit. |

Haha! Thanks for that. :) |

I like your idea about a world team game vs. the Rybka team. |
 |

 |
| whatthefat: Thanks <kutztown46>! I don't know about you, but I'm actually enjoying having a little down time from team games to rejuvenate at the moment. It's allowing me to regather my strength for the next struggle. |

At first, the break was fine but then I missed the competition. I decided to join the Hiarcs Headbangers team. We are playing two games simultaneously against some guy named Highendman who defeated the Rybka cluster. Our captain is <Open Defence>, known as <Dark Horse> over there. The team is small - maybe 20 people at the most. There are maybe a half dozen other cg people on the team. It is a completely different experience. Check it out if you are interested. |

 |
| whatthefat: Interesting - what's the time control on that game? And are you far into it? |
 |
Oct-20-09
 |
| kutztown46: One game is on move 24 and the other is move 26. The time control is two days per half move but blitzes are allowed on both sides and are fairly common. One interesting feature is that you have to post what move you are voting for - no secret votes. The captain counts the votes and moves for the team. |

| twinlark: Hi <kutztown46>! I see you're keeping yourself occupied. You taking part in the next Challenge? |

Good to hear from you. It has been a while. I guess you are getting ready for summer in your part of the world. Yes, I plan to participate in the next Challenge. |

Okay, you've piqued my interest! How do I join? |
 |
Oct-21-09
 |
| kutztown46: Probably the best way is to leave a message at <Open Defence>'s forum. She will give you the links and guide you through the process. There is no cost but she has to grant you clearance to access the forums for the games. Hope to see you there! |

 |
| Open Defence: Hi <whatthefat> if you would like to join you can register at hiarcs.net and send a private message to me <Dark Horse> I can then add you to the team :)
We are a small team but we have had some interesting games. A while ago the Hiarcs and Rybka forum joined forces against a Russian forum |

| twinlark: Hi
Thanks for the Pilger link. Contrast his comments on Rudd with Malcolm "You're So Vain" Turnbull, Rupert "He Struts He Struts" Murdoch and john "He's Got No Ticker" Howard. I see you'e crossing swords with the dining implement on the Kenneth Stroganoff page. DOn't let him put you off...you're right he has something to contribute, and he's quite intelligent, but he needles and insults people to get a rise out of them. I think he's a believer in making friends through the old male technique of taking on a comer to see their mettle. My interjection was an expression of delight of him taking on an excellent arguer from Oz (I think I took him to the cleaners). Don't let him get away with <anything>, most of all don't let him get under your skin. |

| twinlark: By <an excellent arguer>, I meant another excellent arguer, namely you. |

 |
| whatthefat: Ha, thanks. Yes, we had a bit of a go at each other, but all's fair on the Rogoff page - until the admins start watching. ;) I did see your earlier stoush, and admittedly quite enjoyed it! |

| twinlark: I must say I did to, except for his ad hominems, then I got irritated. That page is like more of an intellectual wrestling match, than a discussion page. Good for a morning or evening workout! |

| returnoftheking: <whatthefat> Just want to tell you-
I did say the same as you: you said I wouldn't get it without the engines, I did the same.
Frankly I think it rather hypocritical if you would not give your reasons after I bothered to give you mine, on your request. |

| benjinathan: Why did you delete your post on the frogbert page? I thought it was right. |

That's strange, it seemed to disappear, and then reappear after the post by <TheGladiatres>. Not sure what happened there! |
