Oct-13-17  zborris8: <whiteshark - copycats are dirty rats> I know what you mean, my game collection took ages to put together! I think that collections are the result of personal analysis, and that analysis related to chess must be protected as intellectual property - especially on a chess site. I think it's reasonable for you to demand that site moderators regulate game collections for duplicates in order to protect the best interests of all the members.

Octavia: Hiya, I also copied some collections. It saves having to duplicate games & I always tell the world where I got these collection.

I tried to download your Heidenfels games, but zip files always beat me. I don't know how to open them even though I've got chessbase.

How come you've got 72 games? Heidenfeld only discussed ~ 9 if I remember correctly.

whiteshark: <Octavia: .. <but zip files always beat me. I don't know how to open them>>

I use <7-zip> as zip/unzip tool (programe). It's free. Here's a d/l-link to a German portal: https://www.heise.de/download/produ...

1) unzip <Wolfgang Heidenfeld - Draw!.zip> with a.m. programe 2) open files with chessbase afterwards.

<How come you've got 72 games? Heidenfeld only discussed ~ 9 if I remember correctly.> I don't know either. This file was part of an e-book chess collection and upto now I have no reason to mistrust it/them... ;)

Good luck / Alles Gute!

tpstar: <whiteshark> 1) Please evaluate this middle portion for accuracy in meaning via Google Translate:

<Dr.

*****

Dr. R.Gralla / CB: A flaw that did not fit the contemporaries - along with many who copied them.

S.Maass: The basic idea of Legall is striking: The black monarch is brought down by two riders and a runner in the middle of the board, although White has lost the lady. The more annoying is that the combination is not mandatory, but has a fatal hole, because the duped Saint Brie simply did not have to get involved in the dance. Therefore, the commentators have probably relatively quickly and probably even in the lifetime of Legall geschappen the action: They have the real -played and quasi "illegal" because erroneous train sequence of Legall de Kermeur in hindsight, so to speak, "legal" made. The trick: They have invented relatively meaningless pawn moves and rewritten the game accordingly.

Dr. R.Gralla / CB: And the true person in charge, Maître Legall de Kermeur, tacitly approved that ?!

S.Maass: From him is not known that he had kept firmly against the legend building post festum.

Dr. R.Gralla / CB: With the consequence that the manipulated Lotenotation to the present is considered authentic, in textbooks and databases ...

S.Maass: ... and the forgery becomes the truth.

*****

2) There are a few references to Guttenberg and plagiarism:

<Dr.

*****

Dr. René Gralla / CHESSBASE: You have now set the anti-Guttenberg in check by examining the finale of a much-quoted encounter from pre-revolutionary France.

Stephan Maass: Where, of course, when the ominous position was placed on the board, nobody could anticipate the future Mr. Guttenberg and his Causa.

*****

Is this a uniquely cultural phenomenon, where Germans are particularly offended by Guttenberg? Or was this just a timely political reference? Thanks for any explanation.

whiteshark: <tpstar> I took me a few quarters on the clock to cross-check the text. If you omit his more figurative and partly interlaced language it was actually just a grading of linguistic nuances.

I have highlighted the changes in my translation with <>. Here we go:

Dr. R.Gralla / CB: A flaw that did not fit the contemporaries - along with many who copied them.

S.Maass: The basic idea of Legall is striking: The black <King> is brought down by two <knights> and a <bishop> in the middle of the board, although White has lost the <queen>. The more annoying is that the combination is not <forced>, but has a fatal [in the sense of <awkward/embarrassing>] hole, because the duped Saint Brie simply did not have to get involved <in such a position>.

Therefore, the commentators have probably relatively quickly and <presumably> even in the lifetime of Legall <beautified> the action:

<Afterwards> they have made the real played <and therefore> quasi "illegal" move <sequence/order> of Legall de Kermeur "legal", so to speak. The trick: They have invented relatively meaningless pawn moves and <have> rewritten the game accordingly.

Dr. R.Gralla / CB: And the true person in charge, Maître Legall de Kermeur, tacitly approved that ?!

S.Maass: <It is not known about him> that he had <protested> against the legend building < afterwards>.

Dr. R.Gralla / CB: With the consequence that to the present the manipulated <game notation> is considered authentic, in textbooks and databases ...

S.Maass: ... and the forgery becomes the (<accepted>) truth.

*****
Guttenberg part:
*****

Dr. René Gralla / CHESSBASE: You have now set the anti-Guttenberg in <chess> by examining the finale of a much-quoted encounter from pre-revolutionary France.

Stephan Maass: <Whereby>, when the ominous position was <put> on the board, of course nobody could anticipate the future Mr. Guttenberg and his causa.

*****

<Is this a uniquely cultural phenomenon, where Germans are particularly offended by Guttenberg? Or was this just a timely political reference? Thanks for any explanation.> The latter. (although I have to remark that I found the Guttenberg part in total at least in need of explanation.)
