Dump the World Championship. Chess should be like tennis: four majors a year.

Shams: <FSR> I found a different version that had female pronouns, so that one may be correct. The poem is not in the public domain; I think I grabbed the text from a post on answers.com.

Shams: <JB> <Apparently there's a hint but nothing direct about an abortion.> Well he doesn't use the word, but it's pretty obvious. (I'm reminded of Hemingway's _Hills Like White Elephants_.) Incredibly tacky of Connors to write that in my opinion.

Shams: <I notice that some Carlsen fans don't seem to have much objectivity or grip on reality.> I think it's more that people prone to hagiography and magical thinking are likely to cling to the guy who is at the top of the rating list. In a sense these people are Magnus fans, but in ...

Boomie: <Shams: <Boomie> Did you know Ftacnik when he lived in Seattle?>

Sorry I'm a little late to respond.

No. I never met Ftacnik.

I left the chess scene in 1981 after I blew a won game on 1st board in the final round of the Seattle Amateur (under 2000). The experience was so sour, I gave up tournament chess.

My knowledge of the Seattle chess scene is confined to the 70's. Also I went to Lone Pine a couple of years to watch Petrosian, Smyslov, Reshevsky, and scores of other strong players. And to hang out with Pacific Northwest friends like Yaz and Peter Biyiasas...

HeMateMe: Hey, the sonics are coming back to Seattle, Shams. Break out the Slick Watts headbands, baby! Rain Man! Key arena will be rocking again. Those uniforms are butt-ugly, IMO, but nonetheless its great to have a pro basketball team in town.

Maybe you and the Pearl Jam guys can do some one-hit bowls in the bathroom, between quarters? Beats waiting in long lines for over priced beers.

FSR: <Shams> That online etymological dictionary you cited is a great thing. Check out, for example, this NC-17-rated entry: http://bit.ly/OoIEE5

Check It Out: My mom used to work with Slick Watts at Highpoint where she was a 2nd grade teacher and he the PE teacher. She said he was constantly on the hallway pay phone (can you imagine the days before cels?) making deals of...some sort.

Come on Gus Williams, Jack Sikma and Downtown Freddy Brown!!

Jan-31-13  Jim Bartle: Dennis Johnson! Tom Burleson?

Check It Out: Jim - yes, freckle-face DJ! Lenny Wilkins. Who was that lefty center Seattle had for awhile? He had a real flat sky hook that rarely went through the hoop...

Check It Out: Oh, I think I'm thinking of the Big Smooth who came later...
Jan-31-13  Jim Bartle: You must mean Sam Perkins, the guy who always looked as if he were about to fall asleep. Good player, though.

Abdel Irada: After our last <Kenneth Rogoff> posts about Israel/Palestine, I hazard two "guesses":

(1) <HeMateMe> has been urgently called away from the forum and won't be back until late tomorrow.

(2) When <HMM> does return, he will happen to overlook our posts and will continue his arguments precisely as though they'd never been made.
