|Jul-17-18|| ||Penguincw: Thank you to <WannaBe> for hosting this fun event. Also thanks to France for winning it all. Congrats to <NakoSonorense> for becoming the first repeat winner, and <chessmoron> for taking the silver.|
I'll add the shiny bronze to my trophy case.
See you in 4 years!
|Jul-18-18|| ||Dr Winston OBoogie: Yes, thank you wannabe for opening your forum for the WC wagers. Congratulations to Nako, he certainly knows his stuff. Morf I'm writing out my World Cup review - should be fun - and I'll come and post it in your forum when I've done, mate. Very proud of England. |
Btw wannabe.. Google just got a 4 billion dollar fine for this..
<Google has been fined a record €4.34bn ($5bn; £3.9bn) over Android.
The European Commission said the firm had used the mobile operating system to illegally "cement its dominant position" in search.
The firm's parent Alphabet has been given 90 days to change its business practices or face further penalties of up to 5% of its average global daily turnover.
It has said it plans to appeal.
However, it could easily afford the fine if required - its cash reserves totalled nearly $103bn at the end of March.>
They have such a monopoly over basically everything we use online. I don't mind working for them though :)
|Jul-18-18|| ||valiant: Thank you WannaBe for hosting such a great event! And like we use to say in Sweden - Stort grattis till alla tävlande (även norrmännen). Bra jobbat!|
|Jul-18-18|| ||Count Wedgemore: <valiant: Stort grattis till alla tävlande (även norrmännen).>|
Det var storsint av dig :)
|Jul-18-18|| ||WannaBe: 2:50 minute mark, first chair violin can really use a hair cut|
Oh, I kill meself!!!
|Jul-18-18|| ||WannaBe: If this is the 'New', how come everyone in the audience look so 'not new'?? =))|
|Jul-19-18|| ||juan31: < WannaBe> Better late than never, thanks for the contest|
|Jul-20-18|| ||WannaBe: When technology's use goes horribly wrong:
|Jul-20-18|| ||morfishine: <Dr Winston OBoogie> Please do. I just wanted you to know I picked England after a careful and meticulous research over a grueling 3 month period. This was no joke. I was not just trying to appease the England lovers. |
I was proud of my pick and it was hard to make over my beloved German team!
Well 4th in the World is not too shabby and one of my predictions did in fact come to fruition: Kane won the Golden Boot
and what a great player he is
|Aug-01-18|| ||thegoodanarchist: Hi <WannaBe>
How are you holding up?
|Aug-01-18|| ||WannaBe: <thegoodanarchist> Holding, and still holding (pattern)... =))|
Lots of phone screening calls, nothing solid, no face to face interview with private industry, talked to dozen of recruiters.
Got Monday interview @Sacramento with Cal Dept of Public Health
Tuesday interview @Napa with Cal Dept of Fire and Forestry (The guys out there right now fighting Redding fires)
Wednesday interview @Susanville with same department (but different counties)
Got a call earlier today with a recruiter regarding a position just a few miles north of where I live, apparently this company have been interviewing for month and not been able to find anyone. Will see what happens...
Side note, some of these Job Descriptions (JD) are far out there, borderline unrealistic. I'd see one where I match up 80-85% and get a rejection email. Blaaah!!

That's common nowadays.
I think most companies just keep open some position with a "dream" description, hoping for the God Emperor of that field to show up and apply for a career which he himself created.
<Holding, and still holding (pattern)... =))

I recommend stern self-critique. What is not working? Can you go 180 degrees from it? Do you need to go that far from it?
I used this technique thrice, with a 66.67% success rate.
<Got Monday interview @Sacramento with Cal Dept of Public Health>
I humbly ask, may I give you some advice?
If yes, Go with outrageous optimism and unrealistic self-confidence. This works! They don't know you are not the God Emperor of your field. Show them you are all that.
<Tuesday interview @Napa with Cal Dept of Fire and Forestry (The guys out there right now fighting Redding fires)>
If I may be so bold, I counsel the same as before, only with a humongous serving of empathy for those firefighters, along side the confidence and optimism.
<Wednesday interview @Susanville with same department (but different counties)>
When driving South from Portland, OR, through Modoc National Forest, destination Reno, NV, there are some very desolate miles after hitting the OR/CA border, until one arrives in Susanville. Fortunately, you will be driving North and won't experience that.
<Got a call earlier today with a recruiter regarding a position just a few miles north of where I live, apparently this company have been interviewing for month and not been able to find anyone. Will see what happens...>
Confidence and optimism might just win the day! Wouldn't that be a score, to get a position a few miles from home?
|Aug-02-18|| ||NakoSonorense: <thegoodanarchist> <If yes, Go with outrageous optimism and unrealistic self-confidence.>|
I like this! I will use it, too.
|Aug-10-18|| ||WannaBe: Absolutely fascinating story:
|Aug-11-18|| ||WannaBe: 11 felonies, some of them violent, and guess what the judge gave him?|
|Aug-11-18|| ||offramp: I really like that ABCD.... list of chess players. Very clever and pretty funny!|
|Aug-12-18|| ||thegoodanarchist: < WannaBe: 11 felonies, some of them violent, and guess what the judge gave him?|
|Aug-14-18|| ||Caissanist: Just saw your update about your job search. This sounds like pretty blatant age discrimination to me--lots of tech companies have an "up or out" attitude towards workers over 40. The unrealistic job requirements are probably there so they can discriminate against people based on age and other illegal things. |
You probably should get rid of anything on your resume that indicates your age, and I would definitely look favorably on the government jobs. Government agencies tend to be more open to older workers, since they are more likely to be using older technologies.

US Government should move to purchase those Apple buildings under eminent domain, and then see how much Apple lawyers try to claim for the building's value.
Then drop the eminent domain maneuver, and assess the buildings for the amount Apple argued they are worth
