Sep-16-07  Eastfrisian: I guess, he was one of the not well known chessplayers in the world. I had never heard about him.

SwitchingQuylthulg: Some puzzles from his games:

A pretty easy one he wins to begin with.

Lignell-Niemelä, 1943. Black to play and win immediately.

Another not too complicated one, where he loses:

Niemelä-Keto, 1959. Black to play.

Finally, a pleasing but very tricky one where he's on the receiving end:

R Krogius vs Niemala, 1934. White to play.

<Warning - if you want to solve this one properly, it takes a lot of calculations. Thomas W Ristoja analyses this position for a full page in his tactics book and I feel he was if anything lazy here! So I recommend just trying to see if you can grasp the general idea and leave it at that.> Black has some surprising defensive resources and a win is almost impossible to demonstrate - in fact I'm not sure if there is one by force or not despite analysing it for a couple more pages. Still, what is White's best move here?

Sep-16-07  Guguni: In the last position it looks like the attack sequence starts with white playing R:h7, then Qh5+ (queen can not be captured because of the white bishop) and then the queen can settle on h6 square and after o-o-o the second white rook can join the attack. But this is just a quick glance, I did not make a move by move analyses.

SwitchingQuylthulg: <Guguni> You're right about 1.Rxh7. However, by no means must Black take the rook (1...Kxh7?? as played in the game loses for sure). He has two other good options at his disposal: 1...cxd3 and above all the energetic 1...Bxg5! which might even salvage a draw following, say, 2.Bxg6! (the best try) Bh4+!? (2...fxg6 3.Rxb7 Qc8 4.Nf3 Qxb7 5.Nxg5 also gives Black some chances to save the game) 3.Kf1 fxg6 4.Rxb7 Qc8 5.Nf3 Qxb7 6.Nxh4 Qc6! (this is just the beginning of one sample line and doesn't go halfway towards solving the mess that is this position)

Rajuna hyökkäyspelaajana pidetty <Ilmari Niemelä> (1907-1975) osallistui shakin SM-kilpailuun 21 kertaa - useammin kuin kukaan muu tähän mennessä. Hän voitti ainoan mestaruutensa osallistuttuaan ensimmäisen kerran vuonna 1948. Sen jälkeen menestys oli vaihtelevaa. Olympialaisissa Niemelä edusti Suomea seitsemästi: 1950 Dubrovnikissa, 1952 Helsingissä, 1956 Moskovassa, 1960 Leipzigissa, 1962 Varnassa, 1964 Tel Avivissa ja 1966 Havannassa.

Sep-16-12  Fuegoverde: My favorite game ever is Niemela vs Tal, in Riga 1959, where Tal only moves his Knight in the last five moves of the game. 23... Nc6 ! is one of the prettiest moves I'd ever seen
