| nikolaas: He was a well known person in the beginning of the 20th century. If you went to Germany (to a chess club of course) and you said "I'm from Holland", "There lives Olland" Was the normal reply. He was born in 1867 (13 april) and he founded (as a 19 year old student) the chessclub in Utrecht, Netherlands.
He became a doctor with his thesis "de invloed van het weer op het sterftecijfer" (the influence of the weather on the mortality rate). For many years, he was editor of the periodical from Utrecht's chessclub. After that, he became president and honour president of the club. In the tournament in Karlsbad in 1907, he defeated among others Janowsky and Berger. In 1909 he became the first official champion of the Neherlands. In Scheveningen 1913 he finished on the 3th place. After Janowsky and Alekhine, but before a.o. Yates and Mieses. He defeated also Edward Lasker there. In 1930 he leaved his club and moved to Driebergen. He died there in 1933 |

| EmperorAtahualpa: He was a great personality indeed, too bad that nowadays people get such unpleasant thoughts when reading his first name. His thesis topic sound interesting, undoubtedly it has a great effect, but it must be interesting to read what nineteenth century thoughts on the topic were. |

| EmperorAtahualpa: I actually found his thesis in the national library catalogue. Here is the complete bibliography: Olland, Adolf George. (1896). Invloed van het weer op het sterftecijfer. Amsterdam: Elsevier. |

| nikolaas: <Invloed van het weer og het sterftecijfer> Translated to English that would give: The influence of the weather on the death rate. |
