ALEKSANDRA GORYACHKINA
(born Sep-28-1998) Russia

[what is this?]
Goryachkina is a WGM (2012), the World U10 Girls Champion in 2008, the U14 Girls World Champion of 2011, the U18 European U18 Girls Champion of 2012 and the World U18 Girls Champion of 2012. She has an IM norm (2012).

Championships

She won the Russian PriFR 2008 Girls U18, the European U12 Girls Championship 2010, and the European Girls U14 championship in 2011, and came second in the European U12 Girls Championship in 2009 and third in the World Girls U12 Championship, also in 2009. 12 year old Aleksandra won the 2011 Lyudmilla Rudenko Memorial Tournament, one of the qualifier tournaments for Russia’s Women’s Cup, ahead of 8 WGMs and an IM, by a point with 7.5/9 (TPR 2441), earning her first WGM norm in the process. She subsequently won the European Girls U14 Championship held in Albena in Bulgaria in September 2011 with a score of 7.5/9 (+7 -1 =1).

In November 2011, she won the World Girls U14 Championship held in Brazil with a stunning score of 9/9 and a 2700+ TPR, gaining her 20 Elo for that event alone. In April 2012, the 13 year old came =2nd in the Russian Girls U20 Championship behind 20 year old IM Anastasia Bodnaruk. She contested the World Junior Championship (Girls) (2012), scoring 8/13, 1.5 points off the lead, and placing =11th; it was (for her) a sub-par performance. Soon afterwards she won the European U18 Girls Championship with 7.5/9 (+7 -1 =1), winning the title at the age of 13 years and nearly 11 months. In November 2012, she won the World Girls U18 Championship with 9.5/11 at the age of 14 years 1 month and 21 days.

Tournaments

Goryachkina scored 5/9 in the 2011 Chigorin Memorial, including a win against Moldavian IM Vladimir Hamitevici. Despite a slightly below par performance (3/9) at the 2012 Aeroflot Open B, a strong 5.5/9 at the 2012 Moscow Open E improved her rating for the rating period to March and earned her 2nd WGM norm, although she slipped two places in her open age division. In March 2012, Goryachkina scored 6/11 (TPR 2351) at the European Individual Women's Championship (2012), earning her 3rd WGM norm. She is the youngest WGM in the world at the age of 13 years 5 months, and the youngest since Yifan Hou (12 years and 3 months). Also in March she won the Rector Cup 2012 held in Kharkov with 7/9, 1.5 points clear of the field. In July, she scored a solid 5/9 in the Czech Open - GMA, although her record against her 5 GM opponents was =2 -3. She beat Olga Girya to win the Final of the Russia Cup for Women in December 2012, held in Khanty-Mansiysk. Perhaps over-awed by the occasion, Goryachkina's first participation at Wijk aan Zee was unsuccessful, as she scored only 3.5/13 at Tata Steel (Group C) (2013), winning only one game, placing 12th and shedding 16 rating points. She recovered some of these points with a solid 5.5/9 at the Karpos Open held in March in Macedonia.

Rating

As of 1 May 2013, Goryachkina's rating was 2392, making her the highest rated U16 Girl in the world. She is also the 11th ranked female player in Russia.

The president of the Russian Chess Federation Ilya Levitov had noticed Goryachkina's success as well.

cro777: With completing her WGM norm, Goryachkina becomes the youngest WGM in the world and gets very close to the record of youngest WGM in history World Champion Yifan Hou (12 years and 3 months).

twinlark: OK thanks. There's nothing I can find online about any of her WGM norms, although I assume her win at the Lyudmilla Rudenko was a norm, probably her first. Any idea about the 2nd norm? I'd like to update her bio with this info.

Interesting article although a bit gushy: "An amazing 40th place"?? Good maybe, but amazing?

If Goryachkina hadn't blundered by drawing a position against Skripchenko in which she had a forced mate she might even have qualified for the World Cup if she'd won the last round. As it was, it must have been incredibly bitter sweet to have blundered so horribly, probably feeling so crushed she simply lost the last game, and yet she still qualified for her third WGM norm.

  cro777: <twinlark: Any idea about the 2nd norm?>

Goryachkina fulfilled the grandmaster norm by scoring 5.5/9 at the RSSU Student Grandmaster Cup ( 2012 Moscow Open E).

"Karina Szczepkowska-Horowska drew against Alexandra Goryachkina and became the owner of the Bronze medal. In the case of defeating her Polish rival young Russian player could have snatched the third place, however her misterious draw turned out to be a simple fixation of the grandmaster point...Goryachkina's adult decision".

"Goryachkina first appeared as FIDE rated player in the October 2008 list with ELO of 1889, rapidly improving it to 2019 in the next rating list. Since then she stayed at relatively the same level, until she won her WFM title at the end of 2008- start of 2009 via the World Youth Chess Championships. That proved to be a game changer for her, she quickly set pace for a WIM title (approved at the 82nd FIDE Congress 15-22 October 2011, Krakow, Poland). Now only six months later Goryachkina is a proud owner of 3 WGM norms, soon to be approved as a WGM title".

twinlark: She'll still be kicking herself though. Her f2?? against Skripchencko will haunt her dreams. But as they say in these sorts of circumstances, what doesn't kill you strengthens you.

cro777: Goryachkina convincingly won the traditional international women tournament the 14th Rector's Cup of the Law Academy which took place from 26th March - 3rd April in Kharkov, Ukraine. The rating favorite Goriachkina scored 7/9, a point and a half ahead of her rivals. She once again fulfilled her WGM norm (btw she has already reached it if taking into consideration her previous achievements).

I agree.

She just played Ivanchuk a little while ago and now she is playing a girls event? Makes no sense.
