chessgames.com: Are you saying this is the same person as Alexander Nenashev ?
Feb-13-04

aragorn69: Graf means "Count" in German.
Does "Nanishev" means anything in Russian ?
Feb-13-04   WMD: >>Are you saying this is the same person as Alexander Nenashev?<<

I thought this was common knowledge.

tamar: Yes, it is true. He had a German father whose name was Graf, and decided to use his name.

technical draw: <tamar> How do you "decide" to use your father's name? Isn't it a given?
Feb-13-04
Premium Chessgames Member
tamar: There are examples like Kasparov of using the mother's name. The German Chessbase stories in 1999 did not specify, but said when he repatriated to Germany, he decided to use his German father's name.
Feb-13-04   PinkPanther: <chessgames.com>
Yes, I mentioned that on this website quite a while ago.
Feb-13-04   tud: Harry Weinstein did not sound for communist Russia very sexy. Welcome Garry Kasparov.
Feb-13-04   PinkPanther: <tud>
Doesn't sound very sexy to me either. By the way, Vladimir Kramnik's name is actually Sokolov.
Feb-13-04   marcus13: How Vladimir Kramnik name can be solokov???

Feb-14-04   marcus13: Thanks strange coincidence isn't it.
Feb-14-04   Bitzovich: Wow, i t has some really PIQUANT info on Kramnik in that interview...
Feb-15-04   Lawrence: PP, if you read the chessbase.com article you will see that Vladimir Kramnik's name was never Sokolov.
Feb-15-04   PinkPanther: No but his dad's name was and therefore his should have been. The name Sokolov "is in his blood", the name Kramnik isn't. It's simply a name his father assumed and passed down to him.

Marmot PFL: <There are examples like Kasparov of using the mother's name.>

I understood that his father's name was Weinstein and his mother's was Kasparian, but that neither sounded as russian as Kasparov. I have also heard rumors that Fischer's father wasn't named Fischer as well.
