Feb-08-05   Bogdanel: Yes, he cheated to obtain his elo. In Romania is wel-known for that. He also became president of Romanian Chess Federation through bribery and threats to those who dared to opose him (IM Mircea Pavlov was agressed by his bodyguards). That speaks a lot about the sad situation of nowdays romanian chess. Eventualy he was arested about an year ago, for other illegal bussiness. Unfortunately, that did not change much for chess in our country, which remains the cinderella of sports - very few tournements, no publications, no efoorts to popularize it among kids and young people
Feb-08-05   azaris: Lies and hypocrisy don't survive long on the chessboard. Outside the chessboard, however...
Feb-08-05   euripides: Does the Romanian federation issue Lifemaster titles ?
Feb-08-05   DP12: Romanian federation is still very strong Nisipeanu(nearly 2700),Iordachescu, Rogozenko and several other good GMs.
Feb-08-05   Bogdanel: The strenght of some remarcable individuals has nothing to do with the mess in wich Romanian Federation and romanian chess is since Crisan took control. The sad thing is that he's example was followed by others. Where i live, there is a guy who's the president of the local chess association, is ranked master, and he's no master at all.Fake title, took with the conssent of Crisan and he's henchmen. I don't know how many like him are throughout the country, but there may be more. By the way, Rogozenko and Iordachescu play for Moldavia. But we have other strong players-Istratescu, Vaida, Grigore gabriel, etc.
Jul-18-05   EmperorAtahualpa: I've been to Romania. Trust me, not only chess players are corrupt over there.
Oct-31-05   Runemaster: <euripides: Does the Romanian federation issue Lifemaster titles ?>

Benzol: <jahhaj> <If this guy was a real GM then I'd be World Champion>. After playing through D Sermek vs A Crisan, 2001 I see what you mean.
Oct-31-05   Karpova: From an article on http://www.chesscenter.com/twic/ja2... (2002)

The full list gives Alexandru Crisan at 2588 and a GM. This clearly means that the decision of the FIDE Congress has been ignored. I understand Crisan may be taking legal action against FIDE and a number of Romanians. Whilst he may be correct in believing that the level of evidence he supplied to gain his ratings and titles was no worse than many other players. It seems to me the evidence for his titles is pathetically weak. Crisan won two very strange tournaments in 2001 whose results looked dubious and unverified. At least we have games from those events, for a decade none of his games have been available including for the period when he jumped into the top 50. The one event with well known players he competed in was the Milan Vidmar Memorial. From the evidence of the games there it seems clear that he is now a very weak player of no better than FM standard. Its hard to believe he could have ever been a top 50 player. For instance in one game he lost a trivial ending that many amateurs would have been ashamed to lose. Crisan had a full and to me fair hearing at the FIDE Congress. However it seems that as in so many sports these days that FIDE are not free to impose sanctions even in the most severe cases without worrying about court action.

notyetagm: Crisan must be wealthy to payout so many bribes. What is the source of his wealth?

Caissanist: Does anyone else know of other players who gained the GM title without having any victories against strong opponents published? The only one which I know of is N Shalnev.

Apr-02-07   Interbond: In my Informator nr 46 from 1988 Crisan is listed as a FM with 2340. Of course fram from GM strength, but not a very bad player.
Apr-02-07   Interbond: Of course far....
Jun-30-07   Karpova: http://www.fide.com/ratings/card.ph...

This guy's still listed as "Grandmaster" with a current rating of 2588. He didn't play rated games since October 2001.

Jun-30-07   tud: Things have started to change in my (ex)country in the past 2 years . Economy is getting better , we have remembered our latin origin and we are heading West in politics, less corruption, we may have the first modern president of the last 5-6 decades, and mister Crisan has only problems with FIDE. He is not anymore with RCF, since RCF cannot take him the GM, FIDE can. There is still a lot to be done , but again it is clearly getting better and I am sure we will see this situation fixed.
Aug-21-07   Karpova: <DP12: He played the Milan Vidmar (deluding himself that he could actually justify his rating) and scored a miserable 1/2 out of 8 his only draw was a pity(bribe???) draw with GM Robert Ruck in 12 moves.>

No, Ruck didn't play in the tournament:
http://www.fide.com/ratings/trarc.p...

His only draw was against Mikhalchishin
Mikhalchishin vs A Crisan, 2001 (who drew all of his games).

mateifl: I can't believe this moron has a page here on this site!!! chessgames should delete it !!! He faked he's rating, became Romanian Chess Federation through bribery and corrupt politician friends, and almost destroyed Romanian chess (already in a very difficult situation when he became president). Delete his page !!! He's in jail now, for Heaven's sake!!!

P.S. Not to mention ... How dumb does someone have to be to take part in a real GM tournament, after faking is rating?

Feb-01-08   dumbgai: <mateifl> Crisan was invited to participate in a GM tournament to show whether he was deserving of his rating. Not surprisingly, he scored only one draw and lost the rest of his games. The games are included here because they were played in an official GM tournament, and I find them rather amusing.
Oct-18-08   zoren: I think possibly he believed that he could play at that level.
Nov-18-08   fasting: this is a wierd story..
First I got fazinated, could one do GM-draws without nobody notizing that ones actually rating was way lower than it appeared - like the mikalishin draw. It reminded me of some kind of "art-stunt" or the sakozy-to-palin phone call - where the artist/joker by acting convincing turns things around to great fun for the suroundings. But then the joker, must be able to take of his mask and reveal the trick! Which obviously isn't the case with this big time jerk Crisan - sad for romania, fun story though..
Mar-12-09   jurado96: its like winning the tour of france
with all the juice they take
this guy should have his pidture on,
so we can see him as the biggest idiot
of our game
