Nov-07-05		Petrocephalon: <Calli> Can you expand on that biographical note: was he a prisoner at the camp, killed accidentally, or was he one of the liberators? If you haven't already, his win against Euwe and the annotated game are well worth looking at. The Euwe game is especially rich (IMO).

Nov-08-05		Calli: Prisoner/laborer killed accidentally, I assume. Seems like there should be more games available from the Dutch qualifier in 1942. He won and therfore got the match with Euwe.

Nov-08-05		Calli: Sorry can't add anything more. It was just a brief one line note I read somewhere. Maybe some Dutch members may have more on this promising player whose career was cut tragically short.

Nov-08-05		nescio: I don't know if much more is known. Van den Hoek was transported by the Germans to the "Ruhrgebiet" for the purpose of "Arbeitseinsatz" (forced labour). He was killed there by an English bomb. See also the Salo Landau page. After the war a book was published in memory of the Dutch chess players who were killed in the time of the German occupation. I remember the title as "Partij verloren...", and if by chance I come across it in a second-hand book shop I will certainly be able to expand on the information.

Nov-08-05		sneaky pete: Born Amsterdam, December 1, 1921; died Watenstedt, suburb of Braunschweig (Brunswick), January 14, 1945. The Leeuwarden "qualifier" he won in August, 1942, ahead of strong players like Cortlever, Van Scheltinga and Haije Kramer, was a "candidates tournament", giving the winner the right to challenge Euwe for the national title. In January 1943 he won the Beverwijk "Hoogovens" tournament. Later that year he was deported to do forced labour in a German defence plant. Info from "Partij verloren ...".

The game seems typical for his style; he played strong positional chess and strangulated his opponents but didn't mind the occasional little combination. E. The draw against Euwe in this line also easily could have been a win if you look at the game. It is also noteworthy that van den Hoek was deported after he refused to sign a declaration of loyalty, according to "Partij verloren".
