jenspetersson: Apart from the years mentioned in his bio above Axel Ornstein also won the Swedish Championship in 1987 and 1988.

A brief description in Swedish over this fine player is found at the site of his old club: Kristallens SK: http://www.kristallen.org/historia/...

suenteus po 147: Since my question in The Kibitzer's Café was swallowed up and condensed into a ball of matter half a micron wide, I'll ask it again here. Does anyone know about a game Ornstein played as black in 1978 against someone named Popov? I have the game score (it's a Queen's Indian Defense), but I'm not sure which Popov he played against (there are almost twenty of them in the database) or where the game took place. Any information anyone has is much appreciated.

WannaBe: It's really too bad that Axel Otto Ornstein never played against Rose =)

<suenteus po 147> Did you ever get your answer?

waddayaplay: Ornstein was second in Sweden during most of the 70s (after Ulf Andersson). However, he never attained the GM title.

He still plays in the Swedish highest division league, Elitserien.

waddayaplay: And as Jens Petersson said, he was Swedish champion a total of seven times, equaled only by Erik Ruben Lundin. Ornstein was also once junior champion (in 1967).

May-24-08   Nikita Smirnov: He is also studying to teacher right now in Sweden.
I had him as my mentor in the class for a little tim for about one or two months. And he had a endgame lesson at the Chess Saloons in Stockholm yesterday. And after the lesson i invited him to a blitz game. And I won over him. Here is the game:

White:Axel Ornstein
Black:Nikita Smirnov
Result:0-1

1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Bg5 Be7 5.e5 Nfd7 6.h4
Now I played an interesting move which I use very often 6...Nc6
The main move is 7.Bxe7 followed by 7...Qxe7.
7.Nf3 a6!? 8.Bd3 Nb6 9.Qd2 Bd7 10.0-0-0 Bxg5
Now black has got the position he wants and now he will be playing Qe7 and 0-0-0 and try to get a stabile postition.White will be attacking in every way 11.hxg5 Qe7?!
I don't know if it is a good move.But it looks interesting.But after all it is a 5-5 minutes blitz 12.g6 0-0-0
Winning a temp.
13.gxh7 g6 14.Qg5
Do not exchange here because black has already sacraficed a bit of his kingside position. 14...Qb4 15.a3 Qa5 16.Nd2?
A misstake now black gets the initiative.
16...Nxd4 17.Qe3 Qc5
Now black is slightly better
18.b4??
The biggest misstake. After this move he said "Now I'm going to play a bit silly".And after my move he said "Now I played very silly".He had for about 1 minute after 18.b4 18...Qxc3 19.Nb1
And I get a beautiful mate on the white king.
19...Nb3#
0-1
