CARL HAMPPE (born 1814, died Mar-17-1873) Austria [what is this?] Carl Hamppe born 1814 was a theoretician who made contributions to the Vienna (C25) and the King's Gambit Accepted (C33). As a player he could be quite brilliant but he was also erratic. In matches he lost to Johann Jacob Loewenthal (+4, =0, -5) but defeated Ernst Falkbeer (+16, =0, -15).

Apr-10-06    TheKid: The Vienna Game was first called Hamppe's Game, according to Gary Lane in his book The Vienna Game. Naturally he never won with it :) Apr-10-06    TheKid: Oh, scratch that! He did win with it once. Jul-30-06    waddayaplay: found this on the net... Carl Hamppe was a senior government official in Vienna... he won the Vienna championship in both 1859 and 1860, both times ahead of Steinitz (among others). Oct-16-08    just a kid: I know him most for being White in the Immortal Draw. Nov-02-08    Octal: He seems to be as responsible with his king's safety as NN.
