Ken MacGillivray: It is hard to soar like an eagle when you are surronded by turkey's. Well; at least that's my excuse!!
Sep-28-05   kgodden: BishopBerkeley, I don't know if Chris went to UofM, but he does live in Ann Arbor, and is an IT director at Borders. He told me that at this tourney where he played Gurevich, Tal was there and Chris actually got invited to drink vodka with him and a bunch of GM's in Tal's hotel room.

BishopBerkeley: <kgodden> Thank you for this information! I played against a Chris Eagle on the U of M campus in the early 80s, and he seemed to be a fine fellow (to the extent that one can tell such things OTB).

Perhaps you know that Borders Books originated in Ann Arbor, and I believe the headquarters is still there. I used to hang out at the original Borders and recall being struck with disbelief when a SECOND BORDERS popped up in Southfield, Michigan! After that, they started popping up like mushrooms.

It would be nice to have him post on here! Should you see him again, please tell him that at least one person has very good memories of playing Chess against him!!

(It would also be nice to get some more of his games!)

BishopBerkeley: <Resignation Trap> Thank you for this game!

Would you consider submitting it via the PGN Upload Utility page? It would be nice to have at least one victory in the database for Mr. Eagle, who is a longtime devotee of the Royal Game. (I believe he was "Expert" (USCF) when I played him many years ago.)

Very memorable lines, indeed! But what was not known by the public at the time was that the last few minutes of the descent to the moon were vexed with an unexpected challenge: Neil Armstrong saw that the automatic guidance system of the Eagle was steering the ship toward a field of boulders!!

Armstrong himself bypassed the computer guidance system and took manual control of the Eagle. This in itself must have been very frightening to those at Tranquility Base.

You can actually hear the audio of this, with a bit of reporting overlay, at this site. Simply click the "Listen" button beneath the title. (Probably assumes you have the "Real" player or some equivalent installed.

It's well worth hearing!

There's more than one reason those guys on the ground were about to turn blue!!

Sep-30-05   offramp: Has anyone here heard the rumour that the film Capicorn One was filmed on Mars?
Oct-02-05   kgodden: BishopBerkeley, you can find a TON of Chris Eagle's games at ChessLab.com, including his victory against GM Bisguier that was posted above a couple days ago.

BishopBerkeley: Bravo, <Resignation Trap>! Bravo, <kgodden>! And bravo, <chessgames.com>! Very nice indeed. All sorts of wonderful Michigan names in the list above: Lansing, Westland, Flint, Detroit.

<offramp> Of course, the reason they shot Capricorn One on Mars was the prohibitive cost of studio space in and around the greater Los Angeles area. Though interplanetary travel can be pricey, it pales before the costs incurred in the southern part of the Golden State. (There's also much less traffic.)

Feb-09-06   Bonecrusher: A couple other Chris Eagle facts:

Chris Eagle can divide by zero.

Chris Eagle can solve a Rubic's Cube in one move.

Chris Eagle taught the Kool-Aid man how to burst through walls.

Nov-03-06   SeaEagle: Geez. I goggle myself, and they've added more games "due to interest". Heh. Even with the extra games I'm still Punching Bag of the Chess Stars.

B.B., I am indeed the Chris Eagle from 1980's Ann Arbor. I have many fond memories of the now-defunct U of M Chess Club. And a few bad ones of some guy who called himself Bonecrusher.
