Coen(raad) Zuidema was born in Surakarta. In 1963 he won the Niemeyer tournament for European players under 20. He was awarded the IM title in 1964. He was Dutch Champion in 1972 (he tied for 1st but lost in the playoffs in 1965 and 1973), and European Junior Champion 1962-63. He played in four chess Olympiads (1964, 1966, 1970, 1972).

Aug-29-22  phantasmagorium: Hmmm... a Dutchman born in the Dutch Indies (now Indonesia) during the Imperial Japanese occupation period. Interesting. I hope I am not opening an old wound, but I do wonder if he (or his parents) might have a few harrowing stories of those days.
