Aug-30-07   you vs yourself: This dude is an awesome blitz player. He beat both raffael and starwars today on playchess. Starwars got the highest rating a few days back and lost it today 'cause of this kid.
Aug-31-07   you vs yourself: This kid just beat raffael and his first move was 1...a6:) Seemingly overnight, he's ascended to the top 5 on playchess and crushed the legendary raffael out of top 10.

JointheArmy: <whiteshark> I don't understand. Safarli was cheating, yet Raffael still won...with black?

BTW, I haven't been on playchess for a while, but how did Raffael drop to below 3200? He seemed the most consistent out of all the players there.

Sep-03-07   you vs yourself: He went up the list pretty quickly. Too bad, he was using help to get there. I wonder how they found out about it. By running his games through engines?

The other day he was kibitzing a game between Moro and Raffael; apparently trudodyr(moro) didn't want to play him. During that same game, someone said something about avtosh cheating and he didn't defend himself there.

Sep-03-07   you vs yourself: <JointheArmy> Some of the games were posted in raffael's forum. He is out of form now. Avtosh started crushing him and soon other players like endorphin also started beating him.

From what I've heard from another cheater or maybe he's innocent who knows - they usually don't even bother to handcheck the high rated players above 2900. I think this stopped recently (a year ago?) and now everyone suspicious gets their games checked by hand to see if their is any cheating. This is the only way I can see them doing it as catching someone with two computers is almost impossible.

I heard Holger asks - Hey do you have a minute? Then the GM/IM reply yes, then Holger copies and pastes a paragraph he's prewritten saying something like he's 99% sure your cheating and either fess up now and keep your account with a deleted ELO or be banned forever. If you choose the ladder he is required to check the games over one more time which takes about 3 days and then he locks your account for good.

Whatever the case I think they also report it to the federation you belong to. For example, Naiditsch was reported to the German chess federation, but didn't get any punishment as far as I can tell.

square dance: <jta> do you know which route avtosh went in regards to the conversation with holger?
Sep-03-07
Premium Chessgames Member
JointheArmy: <square dance> Not for sure, but I think he confessed since Holger wouldn't delete his ELO right away if he spoke with avtosh today. If he warned him a few days ago then maybe we won't be seeing him for a very long time.

JointheArmy: Actually I'm sure he confessed now as if he didn't confess - his rank would be a guest permanently instead of a pawn.

square dance: ok, thanks. of course i might rather just have my account permanently locked. who wants to show their face after being busted for cheating?
Sep-04-07   virginmind: thats strage, i was sure that cheating at 5 min blitz its impossible because of too litle time to give the moves to the chess software and then to post the move the soft replies etc. now it seems thats possible. i'd even say its possible at 4, or even 3 min blitz too!

the only cheat proof remains the bullet, but then again, thats not quite chess at all.

It's rather simple for cheaters to pull off 5 minute games especially with increments. All they do is get two computers, preferably one a desktop and the other a laptop then sign in with two accounts. One account will follow the account you are playing so whoever you play the other computer will have the game loaded on the screen. Then all the cheater has to do is press add kibitzer and then Rybka or whatever evaluates each position in real time without you moving any of the pieces. It does this all automatically so there is no time wasted given a high speed connection.

I'm assuming Avtosh blitzed out his opening so there's nothing suspicious and maybe even could have made bad moves on purpose. If he only consulted an engine on critical positions its hard to see how they would catch him.

There are other ways of course such as the actual hacking of the system like what happened to chess21 a while ago. I'm sure bullet isn't even safe with enough creativity.

Sep-04-07   virginmind: <jointhearmy> oops. then, with the system you've described, what possible arguments do playchess.com admins have to catch a cheater? i mean, like you've said, i would only cheat on some 5-6-7 critical moves/moments, and it should be enough for me to win most of the games. anybody of a certain level in chess can make very good moves and even guess at times the best available move on a given position, and so if this happens only 5-6-7 times in a game, what grounds has a playchess admin to say i'm cheating?

ok, lets say one method is to spot the counter intuitive, non-natural (but excellent) moves, which supposedly only a computer (or top gm, which i'm not) would spot, but even those are rather rarely seen in games, don't you think so?

JointheArmy: <virginmind> Really I don't know the grounds of their accusations, but I'd assume its intuitive. Also they have a few years of experience catching cheaters such as I remember someone talking about a guy pretending to be Korchnoi (of all people) years ago. I wasn't around then, but Korchnoi would be the last person I would pick as he seems like one of those "I don't play on the internet because everyone cheats" kinda people.

I'd guess another way they could have caught him is track all the IP's of the observers to see if any are in the same city as him. If there is always one observer that always follows his games and is from the same area then that's a signal as well. Then again if avtosh got creative, he could have used proxies and then this wouldn't have worked.
