Emre Can was born in İzmir, Turkey and learned to play chess when he was seven. (1)
Master Norms
<International Master> The first two of Can's norms were won at the Dubna GM in 2006 in Russia and at the Petrovskaya Ladya GM also in 2006. His third norm came when he scored 5/11 at the European Championship (2007).
<Grandmaster> GM Can's three GM norms came at the Olomouc Chess Summer - GM A - Valoz Cup in August 2007, the Kahraman Olgac Memorial Tournament in July 2009 and at the World Team Chess Championship held in Bursa, Turkey, in 2010. (2)
Tournaments
Can's first international win was his outright first with 7/8 at the Vojvodina Children International that was staged in Novi Sad. This, and a strong 10/19 at the Dubna 2006 GM and an almost equally strong 5.5/10 at the Dubna 2006 GM combined to increase his rating by almost 100 points, the latter two adding two IM norms to his regime. In late 2007, he won the Olomouc Chess Summer - GM A - Valoz Cup tournament in the Czech Republic with 8/11, 1.5 points clear of the field. In 2009, he was =1st at the Kahraman Olgac Memorial in Turkey, gaining his 2nd GM norm. His greatest success so far has been winning Aeroflot Open 2012 B outright with 7.5/9 (+6 =3), a clear point ahead of 2nd place, and with a TPR of 2728. In July 2013, he was outright 2nd with 7.5/9 behind Ioannis Papaioannou at the 5th International open "Artemis Cup" 2013 - A' Group - staged in Greece. At the end of 2014, he was =1st at the Lisbon Christmas International Chess Open in Portugal with 7/9 alongside Bartosz Socko, Rui Miguel Damaso Pereira de Almeida, Kevin Spraggett and Vladimir Burmakin.
Championships
<Youth> Can competed in the European U12 Championship in 2002, and placed =3rd behind Ian Nepomniachtchi and Dmitry Andreikin respectively, and ahead of many other future notables including Magnus Carlsen. He was =1st at the Turkish U14 Championship in 2003, and may have won. (3) In 2005 he won the Turkish U16 Championship.
<University> He won the 2009 Turkish Universities Individual Chess Championship in Istanbul.
<National> Can first played in the Turkish Championship in 2002 when he was 12 years old, and has played in most of the national championships since then. He won the Turkish Championship in 2011.
<Continental> He first played in the European Individual Chess Championship in 2003 and then again in 2006, 2007 (when he gained his 3rd IM norm), 2009, 2011, 2013 and 2014. He scored 7.5/11 to place =5th at the European Individual Championship (2015), thereby qualifying to compete in the World Cup 2015.
<World> Can qualified via his result at the EICC 2015 (see above) to compete in the World Cup (2015). There he lost his first round match to Peter Svidler by 1.5-0.5 to be eliminated from the event.
Team Events (4)
<National Representative> Can first represented Turkey playing board 4 for its "B" team at the European U18 Team Championship in 2002; his team came in at 13th place. He next represented Turkey at the World U16 Olympiad in 2003. Playing board 4, he helped his team to 7th place. In later years, he played for Turkey at the Olympiads of 2008, 2010, 2012 and 2014, at the World Team Championships of 2010 (where he won his 3rd GM norm) and 2013, and at the European Team Championship of 2011.
<Summit> In September 2011, he was a member of the Turkish team that played Iran in the Turkey-Iran Friendship Chess Match in Ankara, the event being won by Iran.
<Continental League> In the European Club Cup, Can played for Turkey's Eczacıbaşı club in 2004 and for his country's Türk Hava Yolları club in 2007.
<City Team> He also played board 2 for Istanbul city at the 1st World Cities Team Championship (2012) staged in Al-Ain.
<National League> Can has played in the Turkish League since 2002.
Rating History
His peak rating was 2605 in 2017/18.
