ENRICO PAOLI
(born Jan-13-1908, died Dec-15-2005) Italy

[what is this?]
Enrico Paoli was born on the 13th of January 1908 in Trieste, Italy. Awarded the IM title in 1951 he was Italian Champion in 1951, 1957 and 1968. Not until the age of 26 did he begin playing chess tournaments, but it didn't take long before he achieved success. He was second in the national tournament in Merano in 1937, third in Milano in 1938 (where he became Italian champion) and third in the Italian Championship in 1939 and 1943.

Paoli was also very keen on endgames and studies; his compositions are well known and he won 176 prizes (first, second or third) in contests organized all over the world.

In 1950 he played the international tournament in Venice where he won the brilliancy prize for a famous game he played against Soviet grandmaster Alexander Kotov. You can view the game here: Kotov vs E Paoli, 1950.

Joshka: Don't know how true this is, but for what it's worth. Just received my "Chess Live Newsletter" and they have some interesting historical facts concerning chess subjects dealing with the term "Oldest". They say Paoli is the oldest living active chess player in the world at 96! Anyone have any 1st hand info on this?

Benzol: <Joshka> Having just done the bio on him you may very well be correct.

Also does anyone know about Trieste. At one stage I think it was an independent state but when was this?

vonKrolock: <Benzol> Trieste, today capital of the autonomous region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia in Italy, an important harbour since the ancient times - the Tergeste of the Romans - and was, between 1387 and 1918, part of the Austrian Empire. From 1719 on, whith the status of "free port" and the notable economical development of what today is Austria, Hungary, Czech Rep., Slovakia, Slovenia etc, the city lived its golden age. Incorporated to Italy in 1918 - From 1947 to 1954, Trieste was the capital of a "Free Terrritory", divided in an Italian 'A' zone and in an Yugoslavian 'B' zone: Perhaps You refer to this particular moment?!

Benzol: <vonKrolock> Thanks mate. I remembered reading somewhere about Trieste being independent and it must have been when it was the capital of the "Free Territory" you mentioned. That's got to be it. It can be tricky placing a player's nationality if the place he/she was born in has changed status a number of times. :)
Jun-28-05   marco78: Enrico Paoli is now GM ad honorem, being a milestone of Italin Chess History. Quite stronger than resulting in ChessGames database!

Benzol: <marco78> Do you know what year he was awarded the GM title? Also, is he still living? If so that would make him probably the oldest player in the database.
Jul-11-05   marco78: He is living and still an active player! indeed he is the oldest active player in the world and of all times. I think he got his title ad honorem 2 or 3 years ago.. recently anyway.
Jul-11-05   IDestroyChess: There are A LOT of missing games. I have 250,000 games database. Not very large, but with full tournaments. It's called 'Perfect base' you can find it in some editions of Chessbase and Fritz

biglo: I see the bio refers to him as an IM and someone says he recently was awarded a GM but the FIDE list on ICC which is a download from FIDE makes no mention of a title.

I note according to http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail... "Paoli become International Master in 1951 and International Arbiter in 1964. In 1969 in Vrsac he missed the Grandmaster title by only half point. But at least Fide gave him the title honoris causa in 1996."

Dec-16-05   mr. nice guy: Are you sure he's not an Opera singer?

Fusilli: <WhiteRook48: it's hard to believe this guy lived so long!!> Yeah, hard to believe for a grandmaster. GMs lead hard lives, most of them endemically short of money. For their life expectancy during the 20th century, take world champions: Capablanca and Alekhine were born 20 or fewer years earlier than Paoli and died in their 50s. Botvinnik lived 82 years and Smyslov is 88 this year, but Tal and Petrosian died in their fifties. Spassky is in his seventies but Fischer passed at 64. Karpov, Kasparov, etc. were born in the second half of the twentieth century, way later than Paoli... they are subject to much better life expectancies than their predecessors.
