They played in the same chess club at the time. Erling Myhre was a dominating figure in Norwegian chess for many years, but in these games he met some of the strongest players of the time. Looking at old olymiads, you are struck by how narrow the base of really good players were, and how hard it must have been to progress for those who lived on the fringe of the chess community. | | waustad: At the moment Carlsen and Hammer are both in the top 220, from a much larger sample. Playing top board at olympiads, or team tournaments in general, for a weak team tends to really hurt one's W-L record in a database like this. It is a little like being the local player in a super tournament, where the player gives up 150 - 200 ELO almost every game. In olympiads it is often even worse, though they usually rest the top rated player if the difference is as much as 500 points. |
