FRANK PARR
(born Dec-17-1918, died Dec-28-2003, 85 years old) United Kingdom

[what is this?]

Frank Parr was born in Wandsworth, London. He was a strong and experienced player of both over-the-board and correspondence chess. He enjoyed one of the longest chess-playing careers on record, from at least the London Boys' Championship in 1933 to the Hastings Challengers (1999/00) two-thirds of a century later.

Parr won Hastings (1939/40). He was British Correspondence Champion in 1948 (joint), 1949 (joint), 1950 and 1956. According to Chessmetrics, he was the No. 233 player in the world in November 1946 and January 1947. His highest rating by their reckoning was 2463 in September 1955 (at which time he was No. 250 in the world).

Parr won the celebrated brilliancy F Parr vs G Wheatcroft, 1938 in the City of London Chess Club Championship, that has since been published in many magazines and anthologies. He had a key position from this game made into an elegant tapestry which he hung on the wall in his living room at home. His son David Parr was also a good player.

Benzol: From a recent article from Len Barden's Guardian Weekly Column.

"Frank Parr, who won the Hastings Premier in 1939-40 and was one of the last links with pre-1939 British chess, has died aged 85. He was a feared attacker".

Dec-17-07  brankat: While looking at his photograph I could not help thinking: What happened there?! So young, such a potential! And yet, as Sir Walter Reilgh spelling?) would say: "Even such is time ....."

Either way, Happy Birthday Mr.Parr!

fm avari viraf: During my frequent participation in the International Hastings Chess Congress Chess Tournaments at Hastings, England, I often met him & also witnessed his games. He was a thorough gentleman & a Wonderful person. May God Bless His Soul Peace in Heaven, Eternally.
Dec-17-10  ozmikey: I met him only once, at the 1996 Hastings (introducing myself on the basis that I knew his son in Australia very well, which was true!). There was a great warmth and generosity about him which was immediately apparent.

<GrahamClayton> I spoke to Peter a few weeks ago, he's finally selling up at Chess Discount Sales. The end of an era!

May-31-13  The Last Straw: Does anyone know his highest rating by any chance?
May-31-13  Nosnibor: According to the first National Grading list in 1953 he was a 3A player .By 1957 he had risen to a 2B Grade.Equivalent to a rating in the U.K.between 217 and 224.This put him in the top 23 players at that time. The equivalent elo grade would have been approximately 2344.I boarded at the same house with him in 1969 whilst playing at the B.C.F.events in Rhyl Wales.A very pleasant gentleman.
Oct-28-15  WizPip: I'll check to see if I can find any info on this tapestry, but I don't remember seeing it.
Mar-05-17  WizPip: Whilst going through my grandfather's photo collection I came across a 1975 photo of the tapestry! It was faded and blurry, so I've done my best to enhance it: http://imgur.com/a/qMuw8
