Gennadi Pavlovich Kuzmin was born in Mariinsk*. He was awarded the GM title in 1973. He was 3rd= in the USSR Championship 1972 and 2nd= in the following one in 1973. Other good results included 1st or 1st= placings at Hastings 1973-74, Baku 1977, Tallinn 1979, Kladovo 1980, Dortmund 1981 and Bangalore 1981. He was also 2nd at Tallinn 1985.

<He has also been a successful coach; first in the 1980ís with Maia Chiburdanidze, who won three world titles, and then in 2002 he had another major success with Ruslan Ponomariov, who became the 16th World Champion.

Kuzmin was a member of the Soviet team which won the gold in the 1974 Olympiad. At the same competition he won a bronze medal for the third best individual score at board six.
