Aug-10-04  awacs: IM Georgi Orlov is well-known for his Black Knights' Tango expertise (1.d4Nf6 2.c4Nc6). based in Seattle WA. I'll dredge up a few more of his interesting games. Casey Collins (awacs)
Aug-10-04  shr0pshire: Orlov won the US championships as well.
Jan-16-05  kvcs: Let us, for the sake of argument, say that the ONLY thing "wrong" with IM Georgi Orlov is the "IM" designation....our group [Kxe6s VEREIN Chess Society] hopes he becomes a GM very SOON!!!!!!! As for his Chess knowledge, theoretical acumen,
sportsmanship, organizational/promotional skills, and publishing abilities, he is without peer.

Shams: Orlov is a fixture in Washington State, the best known local player besides Seirawan. The story goes he scored one or two GM norms before retiring from active play, I think because of his family. A couple years ago he won the Keres Memorial with a perfect score, ahead of many GMs.
Jul-06-05  altmann1: georgy is a fine teacher and gentleman.
Apr-23-08  Petrosianic: <shr0pshire> <Orlov won the US championships as well.>

He didn't. He's <played> in the US Championships, yes (in 1994 and 1995), but didn't win either time.

He was 1994 US Open Champion I believe.

Apr-23-08  Petrosianic: Oh, the US <Open>. Yeah, I think he did win that one. I think he was involved in one of those huge ties for first in the mid 90's.

Apr-23-08  Tomlinsky: <Petrosianic> Having checked it turns out that he had quite a year in 1994.

1st National US Championship
1st Naional US Open
1st North American Open
1st World Open

Among many other impressive tournament resuls. At the end of the year he had a USCF rating of 2600 and a USCF Rapid rating of 2656

http://main.uschess.org/component/o...

He also beat Seirawan +5 =3 in a Rapid head to head.

That's one heckuva strong IM.

Sep-17-10  PhilFeeley: He usually plays in the Keres Memorial in Vancouver, BC, every year. There's a Yelizaveta Orlova on the Canadian women's Olympiad team, so I wonder if she's his daughter. Also wondering why she plays for Canada.
