GIDEON STAHLBERG
(born Jan-26-1908, died May-26-1967) Sweden (citizen of Argentina)

[what is this?]
Anders Gideon Tom Ståhlberg was born in Sweden in 1908. His greatest successes came in the 1930's with a match victory over Aron Nimzowitsch and a record 11 consecutive Swedish championships. After the Buenos Aires Olympiad of 1939, when World War II broke out, Ståhlberg was one of the players who elected to stay in Argentina. Following the war, he placed seventh in the Budapest Candidates Tournament in 1950, the year he was awarded the grandmaster title. He also qualified for the Candidates in 1953, but finished in last place.

Calli: Kind of like it. Sämisch or José Raúl Capablanca would be nice. But, CG, don't get carried away with original names. Szmul Rzeszewski would not be good. :-)

iron maiden: I could not find Ståhlberg's exact date of birth for his bio. Would anyone more knowledgeable (Benzol maybe?) care to help me out?

  iron maiden: Thanks.
Jan-22-05   Eopithecus: I once got to ask GM Averrbakh which player was his "bete noir", without any hesitation he said Stahlberg.
Mar-06-05   rochade18: so the Swedish "a with dot", is it pronounced like the a in fast or plant (British English)?
Mar-06-05   HSOL: rochade18: so the Swedish "a with dot", is it pronounced like the a in fast or plant (British English)?

At least in this case it's pronounced more like the a in all.

Ziggurat: According to Jeff Sonas' calculations (see http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail...), Ståhlberg was the best-performing player ("Oscar winner") in the world in 1947.
Nov-18-05   Runemaster: <Larsker: My "Ordbog over det danske sprog" has the word paaaande ("breathe upon"). That's four identical letters in a row. Has any other language ever bettered that?>

I don't know one that's bettered it, but I think Estonian has the word "jaaaar" (with two dots on all the a's) which means 'The Ice Age'. There's a pop group by that name as well. I don't speak Estonian, but ever since I saw the word, it's become one of my favourites in any language.

Nov-18-05   euripides: <det danske sprog> a biography of Carlsen ?
Feb-01-06   Bashful Bob: Actually, the desciption "a with a dot" is not alltogether correct... it should be "a with a small circle". The letter "å" is a combination of "a" and "o", that is a pronounciation like a "rounded a".

Ziggurat: The "å" sounds something like the word "awe" pronounced by a Briton (think Hugh Grant).

Mar-23-06   babakova: Some swede who would care to tell me how Gideon is pronounced? Does one pronounce the G or is it more like Jidejån?
Apr-07-06   Bashful Bob: Gideon, pronounced "ji:deon".
Sep-27-06   Nikita Smirnov: There is some pictures of him in the Chess house in Stockholm.
Oct-29-06   Nikita Smirnov: Or also chess saloons!
Jan-28-07   nescio: Stahlberg was also arbiter at all World Championship matches from Botvinnik-Smyslov 1954 to Botvinnik-Petrosian 1963.
Apr-01-07   barbababa: Å also means a river in Swedish and ö means an island.
