Antunac was born in Bari, Italy. He learned the game of chess at the age of 5. He won the youth championship of Zagreb in 1958 and 1962. Antunac was Croatian Junior champion in 1962 and 1963. He also was Yugoslav Junior champion in 1963. He was awarded the title of International Master in 1975.
