Apr-15-04  Carnivore: I am reading his book 'World Champion at the third attempt'. Enjoyable so far.
Dec-16-04  ruylopez900: Does anyone know if Sanakoev still plays the game competitvely or if he's retired from that aspect of the game?

Benzol: Sanakoev was born 17th April 1935 in Voronezh. He became a CIM in 1971 and got the CGM title in 1984 when he finished 3rd in the WCC Championship. He eventually got the WCC title in 1990 at the third attempt hence the name of his book.
Aug-04-05  Hesam7: <Carnivore> How was the book? Can you give your opinion?

Anyone else who has read the book "Third Attempt"?

Apr-17-09  YoungEd: I have read the book too (used to own a copy, got lost in a move or something). Pretty good, though really intended for someone considerably better than marginal class B player me.
Apr-17-09  WhiteRook48: happy birthday
Apr-17-09  Alphastar: I believe he is the primary exponent of the Voronezh against Alekhine's Defence.

How about a "Fourth Attempt"?

GrahamClayton: Here is the position in the game between Sanakoeyev and Shaposhnikov from the 6th USSR Correspondence Chess championship, played between 1963 and 1964, after Black played 21...♘c4

click for larger view

White appears to be in trouble, with 3 pieces "en prise", plus the threat of 22...♘e5, attacking the White Queen. How does White stop the threat of 22...♘e5?. White found the brilliant 22.♘c6!!!, putting a fourth piece "en prise". Analysis shows that none of the 4 pieces can be taken. Black tried his original idea of 22...♘e5, but after 23.♘e5 ♗b7 24.♕g7+ ♔g7 25.♖f7+ ♔h8 26.♖h7+ ♔g8 27.♘g4 resigned, due to the threat of ♘h6+

DrNyet: I hadn't heard of Sanakoev (or didn't recall the name) but stumbled across the book (World Champion at the Third Attempt) and am reading it. I think he is one of the better instructional writers I've come across and highly recommend the book, both for the prose and analysis.

It also contains what to me are interesting comments about Soviet life and chess, as well as the human side of his correspondence (and other chess) experiences and development.
