Jun-12-04  weirdoid: Seems that all the Ardiansyahs here (Ardiansyah Haji, Ardiansyah H, and Herman Ardiansyah - did I miss any Ardiansyahs?) are the same individuals. My uncle (who lived in Indonesia back in late '70s and early '80s) told me that he was the strongest player in Indonesia at that time, and was considered something of Indonesian golden boy of chess (I think he said A. was already an IM in his late teenage - was quite an achievement those days, unlike now where teenage GMs are the norm). However, A. had hard times getting a GM norm, and by 1986 (when he finally did become a GM) he was already surpassed by Utut Adianto as Indonesia's No. 1.

Also, I doubt that his name was in fact anything more than simply "Ardiansyah". Many (most?) Indonesians only have one name, and "Haji" is some sort of honorary religious title it seems. Any info on this is welcome! Regards, w

Jul-15-05  GreaseMonkey: Here I really risk being put right - but isn't a Haj an honorary title for a Muslim who has made the pilgrimage to Mecca. Hence weirdoid is correct - I think!? Expert advice of course very welcome
Aug-30-08  myschkin: . . .

National champion 1969, 1970, 1974, 1976. IM 1969. GM 1986.

The second Indonesian GM. A prolific chess writer, the late Ds FKN Harahap, wrote that Ardiansyah was one of the best Indonesian chess player ever (the others were Tan Hoan Liong aka Tan Hiong Liong and Baris M Hutagalung). He possesses world class tactical skill and amazing fantasies. But lack of understandings of many modern-and-not-so-modern openings, sometimes-anti-positional approaches, and above all erratic form prevent him to break 2500, not to mention 2600, rating barrier. His games in 1st First Lady Cup 1982 probably best reflect the aforementioned.

Funny, I have until now only known this guy as "Ardijansah". Former president of AIPE (chess journalists' association) Svend Novrup called him "the man without a given name". I suppose he was right.

That is nearly correct. The pilgrimage itself is called the Hajj; hence one who has made it is called Hajji or Haji.
