These would appear to be the writings of this Brasilian IM.

Feb-20-06   EmperorAtahualpa: It's interesting to hear about this chessplayer! I'm not sure where in Brazil he lives, but he might live in one of those tiny Dutch community villages that are leftovers of the Dutch colonial settlements along the Brazilian coastline.

A good example is the Dutch community in a Brazilian town called Castrolanda:

vonKrolock: Interesting stuff <EmperorAtahualpa> and <gmgomes>! Castro is a municipality from my State, around 150 km west from here, what is really 'a little jump' in our country-continent - of course it's a city in the highlands, with a very mild climate: milk, cheese and youghurts from there are very appreciated in the centers all around the State. Herman Claudius' family was from Rio Grande do Sul, i can not recall the name of the city, but surely they lived (or at least his brother Dirk Dagobert) in the same southern city (Pelotas i believe) where Mecking started his career in the early 60ies (both youngsters studied Chess together) The van Riemsdijk brothers later moved to São Paulo - Herman Claudius is one of the leading personalities in our Chess comunity - as player, newspaper colunist (his section in "O Estado de São Paulo" is very important) and other activities related to Chess.

Jul-21-06   arbivara: Born in Tiel, Netherlands, van Riemsdijk got to Brazil in 1958. His family first lived in a farm in Rio Grande do Sul, as vonKrolock stated (I'm not sure in which municipality, though). They soon moved to Pelotas (where his brother, Dirk Dagobert was Mecking's tutor), where Herman lived until the age of 15. Then he moved to State's capital, Porto Alegre, where he attended to High School. Finishing High School, he received an invitation to play chess for the municipality of Maringa in the State of Parana. He decided to become a chess professional and accepted Maringa's invitation. The invitation was made by Queenti Matsuura, chess pioneer in Parana State, and father of Everaldo Matsuura, International Master and 1 time Brazilian Champion. In his second year in Maringa, Herman started his College studies in Languages (English and Portuguese) and won Parana State Championship. Finishing that year, he moved to Presidente Prudente (in Sao Paulo State) for which he also played. In this year he won his first (of seven - he's the record holder) Sao Paulo State Championship. In the following year (I think that's 68) he started to play for the municipality of Santo Andre (in the Sao Paulo Metropolitan Area), moving to the Capital, where he still lives. In the following year he graduated in Languagues (having studied each of the 4 years in a different city: Maringa, Pres Prudente, Sto Andre and S Paulo). In 1970 he won his first Brazilian Championship, which happened before he was granted the Brazilian citizenship (which would occur in 1972 - year in which he latter married). In 70 he also started his chess column for the newspaper 'O Estado de S. Paulo', which went continously until 2001. In 1973 his first son was born and latter his second Brazilian title was conquered. He also has a third Brazilian Championship, conquered in 1989 in a play-off with Cicero Braga, played in the municipality of Guarulhos, also in Metropolitan Area and for which he played then. The original tournament was played in the previous year and held in the 'Clube de Xadrez Sao Paulo'. He would latter become Club's president for two consecutive terms (from Club's centennial year 2002 until 2005). He mantains a webpage (Portuguese) in http://www.hiperchess.com.br/. I think I've alredy overdone his little bio, but I would gladly answer any Van Riemsdijk (Brazilian Branch of the family only, though) related question.
Jul-22-06   arbivara: BTW, game #7 (victory over Najdorf in Sao Paulo, 1978) is not Herman's but actually Dirk's. Herman's game with Najdorf in the given tournament (for which he was the organizer) is #12. The notable games section could include his 2 draws with Tal, and one draw and a victory against Smyslov (he also lost one to Vassily - game #14).

Benzol: <arbivara> Did Herman have only one brother?
Jul-22-06   arbivara: His father was married twice. In his first marriage, he had three children: 2 sons and a daughter. Then he got widower and remarried. His second wife, quite younger is a cousin of the first one. BTW, she lives in a tiny Dutch community, Holambra in the Sao Paulo State. They had four sons: Dirk, the third, and Herman, the fourth (and the only born post WWII), are the only chessplayers. Of course, all the others know how to play.

Benzol: If I'm not mistaken Herman's brother lives in my country New Zealand in a town called New Plymouth. BTW I've played Herman in a similtaneous exhibition.
Jul-22-06   arbivara: You're wright, as I've posted in your chessforum

Benzol: <arbivara> Thanks for your info. Do you have any details of his Pan-American Championship win. Just interested. Thanks in advance.
Jul-23-06   arbivara: For that, I'll have to make some research, which won't be possible for a whole week (since I'll be out of town).

Benzol: <vonKrolock> Many thanks my friend.

:)

Nov-17-07   arbivara: It took me much more than previously intended, but I finally managed to get things done. On the bright side it's exactly 30 years since van Riemsdijk achieved his Pan-American victory, so we decided to do a 'retro-coverage' of this tournament, releasing the information in the same dates the rounds were played. To see it - texts in Portuguese, include the games - go to Herman's page, HiperChess (http://www.hiperchess.com.br/)
