Domdaniel: After the 1974 Nice Olympiad, some commentator came up with the obvious pun: "MacGrillen gaves Schmidt a Grilling but could not quite win..."

Those 1974 games don't seem to be available here, which is a pity.

Domdaniel: It won't often be applicable, of course, but in cases where there are gaps in the database record for a Player of the Day it'd be nice if we could 'celebrate' the occasion by trying to fill the holes.

There are more MacGrillen games (I think) in TICA, The Irish Chess Archive, reachable via the same link as the biographical note above.

chessgames.com: <it'd be nice if we could 'celebrate' the occasion by trying to fill the holes.> We do that sometimes. Today would be a great day for that; we'll see what we can dig up.

Domdaniel: <chessgames> Thank you for that, and on St Patrick's day as well. Nice one -- you people are stars. I've played against an awful lot of those players and it's good to see them represented here. And TICAbase, developed and operated in the 1990s by IM Mark Orr, is a model resource of its type.

Players born in Ireland and included in TICA include Alexander McDonnell, James Mason and Hugh Alexander. Also featured are those born elsewhere who represented Ireland, such as Brian Reilly, Wolfgang Heidenfeld, Tim Harding and Alex Baburin.
