twinlark: Very nice game by Smerdon. He deserves a GM norm just for that game.
Jan-05-06   Where is my mind: Yeah it was,his game against Roland Schmaltz with the sicilian dragon was impresive as well.
Jan-05-06   gazzawhite: <twinlark> Ian Smerdon? A mixture of Ian Rogers and David Smerdon, perhaps?

Good win by Smerdon, but what was that last move by Xie? Did he blunder his queen?

I actually had a friend who played George Xie in a teams competition (he was board 1, I was board 3 so I ONLY got to play a 1950 guy...). We were Sydney Uni B, they were Hyde Park or something, I can't remember. Anyway, we were 4 guys rated 1200, they had George Xie, Vladimir Smirnov, a 1950 guy, and a 1750 guy. And we BEAT THEM 2.5-1.5! It was incredible. George Xie blundered his queen to my 1200 friend. Xie's queen was being indirectly attacked by a rook (a bishop was in the path). But my friend moved his bishop to give check, leaving Xie's queen high and dry. He resigned immediately, it was incredible! Smirnov also lost, the 1950 guy beat me, and the 1750 guy drew with our Board 4.

It was the last round too. I'll bet you don't believe me, but Tomek Rej, Simon Quick, Andrew Bird, they were all there.

twinlark: <gazzawhite> Ah well, I didn't call him David Rogers. :)

Xie's last move leaving his Queen en prise to two pieces was a beauty. But he was thoroughly stuffed anyway.

I remember nearly being lynched during the team championships in Adelaide some years ago. I'd played for Adelaide Uni and started off in B Grade and then moved to play A Grade. In the last round, the rules enabled Uni to shift me back to the first board in B Grade and we beat the Hungarian club to wrest first prize from them.

When I thanked my opponent in Hungarian (my parents were Hungarian), they all looked at me and I thought it was a good idea to leave. My Dad said they would have considered me a traitor...Tough game chess.

Chnebelgrind: Just back from the office I viewed the games. Another convincing victory by David Smerdon.

Chnebelgrind: Rogers-Johansen 1-0. Rogers and David Smerdon now leading before the final round. Curious course in Murray-Canfell. Did Canfell overlook 58.f4+, when he played 57...Kg5?

Jun-09-06   Runemaster: Ian Rogers features a lot in my new game collection "Australia beats the World": Game Collection: Australia Beats The World

I was surprised myself how many famous scalps there were in this collection. At a quick count, it includes five world champions or world championship challengers.

Jun-12-06   Runemaster: Actually, it's seven champions or challengers - I overlooked Smyslov and Tarrasch.
Jun-26-06   WMD: Sir Donald Bradman, Rod Laver, Michael Hutchence, Cecil Purdy, can you hear me? Your boys took one hell of a beating!

Not a bad collection there. I'd question the legitimacy of including Lajos Steiner though - especially the games before he emigrated in 1939. Also, since Purdy was a Correspondence World Champion, there must surely be some more games of his that could be included.
Jan-07-07   Albertan: Check out this game by Rogers..it happened at the 1992 Manila Olympiad...three sacrifices by Rogers...yet Kasparov would not vote for this game for the Brilliancy Prize...instead Kasparov submitted three of his own games for the brillancy prize...what an ego!!

Benzol: I'm saddened that illness has cut his competitive career short and I wish him all the best in his retirement. He's done a great deal for chess in the whole of Australasia. Good luck Ian.

WannaBe: Can't believe it's taken me this long to realize that GM Rogers no longer competes...

I very much love his articles in the USCF magazine that I get, and I will remember the time he was at the American Open (where the picture was taken) and the pleasure I had meeting him!

(As a side note, the picture was taken after his draw against a much weaker player, and he kept on moving/fidgeting as I try to capture the 'perfect shot' of him, finally, he realized what I was trying to do, and stopped moving, gave me the opportunity for the picture that's displayed here. =)

He's a terrific commentator as well. At the recent tournament in Canberra he was commenting on the top games (usually GM games) on demonstration boards. He is so engaging and insightful, it was impossible to leave his analysis sessions before he finished.

His retirement loses a top player for Australia, but he's mentoring some of our up and coming players, most recently Zhao Zong Yuan who recently gained his GM title after winning 3 GM norms in a few weeks. That's not to mention all the columns he writes, such as in the Canberra Times, and his other unsung work for Australian chess.

Ian's an awesome bloke.
